    maher was irish right ? was that when ireland was one country if so does that count as being british ,would he of been able to fight for the british tittle

    yeh i gotta include both.

    dempsey werent irish either. he was born in usa and was classed as american nationality.

    yeah i have been putting bowker forward as a legit world champ myself ,and len harvey i admit to overlloking :oops: on my little list's of brit/irish fighters to claim a world tittle since 1888/9 (since gloves)

    Born in Manassa, Colorado, with the name of William Harrison Dempsey, he grew up in a poor family of mixed ancestry. According to a January 11, 1955 Sports Illustrated article, his father, Hiram Dempsey, was Irish.
