He meets Bernard Hopkins. 1) Glen Johnson was an undefeated monster 33-0. Did he imagine he would lose every minute in the fight and be stopped for the only time in his career ? 2) Tito Trinidad was undefeated 40-0, 3 division champ. Did he imagine he would lose every minute in the fight and be stopped for the only time in his career ? 3) Oscar De La Hoya was a six division champ who lost 2 close and disputed decisions in his career. Did he imagine He would be knocked out for the only time in his career ? and by a body shot ? 4) Jermain Taylor was a monster who knocked out everybody. He met Bernard Hopkins twice, got a boxing lesson, became an appologetic and scared fighter. He lost his soul and was never the same after. 5) Antonio Tarver was the legend killer. Knocked out Roy Jones, beat him again and beat Glen Johnson. He called himself the best fighter in the world. Did he win a round against Bernard Hopkins ? Did he imagine being knocked down and embarressed by a granpa ? 6) Winky Wright was second on the pound for pound list. most avoided fighter in the planet. Hasn't lost in many years. Did he imagine losing a wide decision against a 42 years old ? 7) Joe Calzaghe was second on the pound for pound list and with the biggest ego in boxing. Hasn't lost in 18 years and coming of the biggest win of his career. Did he imagine getting knocked down on his ass on the first round and having the closest fight in his career with a 43 years old senior citizen ? The word is Kelly Pavlik thinks he is invincible and wants to knock Bernard Hopkins out. Good luck Kelly - you will definitely need it !
Can't argue with the fact that Kelly will certainly be up against a difficult foe who will show him things he's never seen before.
Excellent thread. I don't agree with this sentence at all: Jermain Taylor was a monster who knocked out everybody No, he wasn't. But other than that, excellent points made, from one Hopkins fan to another :good
This win is both under and over-rated. Look carefully at Johnson's wins in the run up to the Hopkins fight. There is nothing very special. On the other hand, we know he is physically very capable and durable now, and Hopkins took him apart at the joints. Hard win to appraise. Regardless of the fact that Trinidad was smaller, Hopkins was brilliant tht night - a flawless performance. I don't know if he did, but I certainly did. Oscar looked soft to the body against Sturm and although he was more cut against Oscar it seemed the most likely outcome, a KO at the very least. Quite simply, Oscar is to small to compete with Hopkins at MW. However. I again think that it is the manner of the performance rather than the man it was executed against. Hopkins paced it perfectly, positioned himself perfectly, stepped up a gear at the perfect time. He really is unequalled as a general in the modern era - with the possible exception of Hollyfield. ALL things considered - the weight, the age Hopkins was at, this may be Bernard's best win. Scooped the 175 title way past prime. Nice. Kelly Pavlik is a class operator. I think that Kelly himself is not particularly interested in HOW the win comes. I agree with you that he will not knock out Hopkins.
Thanks man. And yeah, I know what you are talking about, "monster" - I meant that he was regarded as a monster because he was offensive, had many knockout wins and barely lost a round in his career back then.
well, whether you like hopkins or not, you have to admit one thing, nobody looks good fightitng hopkins. with that chin, defense and ring tactics, he will fusturate just about anybody. lets see if he can do it one more itme against pavlik and then retire.
Damn right he is. When the man turned 41, he moved up two weight divisions and fought 3 top 5 pound for pounders in a row, beating two by wide decisions and losing one split and disputed decision. He is 2 months shy of 44 and he fights another pound for pounder. In a 20 years long career - Not only he was never stopped, but also never dominated in the ring. If B-Hop isn't a monster, who in boxing is ?
well he lost to joe calzaghe who is no sping chicken himself. based on workrate . and Kp is 26 years old. Kp will win this on work rate. but will suffer an early knockdown in the process when B-hop catches him squaring up.
Roy Jones was invincible and beat him comfortably. Joan Guzman would do the same to this old version of Hopkins.
the tito express is over beat down by B-hop, Jabbed to death by WINky and then popshotedd to hell suffering to knock downs agianst RJJ:yep
