1 thing I would like to know is which way your hand should as in vertical or horizontal. I was taught to throw the hook with my hand in a vertical positional but it feels faster and stronger horizontally. Which way is correct? Does it really matter?

Everyone has different opinions on this.

As long as you land with the knuckle part of the glove it makes little difference. Use which ever way you find more comfortable.

If you want to telegraph it, then throw it in a horizontal position from the outset. You'll get a bit more power but you'll hardly land it.

Keeping it vertical means the opponent is less likely to see it, but at the cost of a bit of power.

Old skool trainers taught their fighters to keep it vertical until the last second, and then 'turn it over', thereby landing it in a horizontal position and getting a split second extra snap into it.

It's always a compromise between power and telegraphing ur shots.

Very good video, that's the basics of throwing a punch and how it works but 99% can't or don't do it properly.
