What was up with his corner asking him if he wanted to quit after the 5th?

That is NOT the way to motivate your fighter - this is only acceptable when your guy is clearly outmatched and getting beaten up - NOT when you're up on the cards going into the 6th and its still anyone's fight.

I think the corner planted the seeds of doubt that made him not fight back.

Talking about "I'm gonna stop this, do YOU want to stop this? Are you OK?" - Sounds more like a concerned mother than a damn boxing trainer.

If he had no heart he would've stopped when getting knocked down, would've covered up instead of getting into those crazy exchanges.. just saying.

Dude still quit though. I do agree with you though and think he has a terrible trainer. He has all the physical tools neccessary to be a great fighter, he just needs a non-Mexican trainer that emphasizes defense and solid work, instead of that Mexican standing and trading in the middle of the ring bull****.

his corner was telling him to boix he admitted that he did not follow the game plan. the blame falls sqarely on the boxer not the trainer.

Bull. The trainer knows their fighter better than any of us. The corner is there not only guide the fighter through the fight, but also protect the fighter. They already instructed him through the fight to fight smarter, not brawl, and he failed to follow the game plan, got hurt plenty of times and was showing signs of being broken. They were concerned for their fighter and wanted to know how much he had left so they asked him "are you ok?". He didn't respond so they asked if he wanted them to stop the fight. Again, he didn't respond. Its up to the fighter to decide if he wants to continue. Take for example, the fight between Juan Manuel Lopez and Gerry Penalosa. Gerry was getting beat up in there and Roach told him he was going to stop the fight. Gerry instead of saying nothing or being content with it, told Roach not to stop it and he went out there fought his ass off for a couple more rounds before Roach really stopped it. Penalosa didn't go out there and stop fighting, he fought even harder to make a statement that he did want to fight!

They were talking about stopping the fight - nothing about him wanting to quit.

If my trainer said that to me my heart would truly sink, why would you offer to stop the fight if you didn't believe your fighter was in serious trouble?

When your corner wants to pull you out then your morale goes to ****, and you can't fight without that. He seems to be emotionally fragile and who knows, maybe this will toughen him up and prepare him for hard fights, or it will ruin him.

Exactly....I was saying that myself. Especially for a young and inexperienced fighter like Vic. Look.....bottom line he did quit. But I don't fault the kid for it. I didn't Fault Cotto when he did it with Marg. These guys are in a very TOUGH and RIKSY sport. They should listen to their bodys'. And come back to fight anther day and Vic is 22! He's got a good career ahead of himself "IF" he hasn't taken too much of a mental hit. HIs confidence needs to be built up again before he steps up.

Bollocks, corners say that to fighters all the time when they want the fighter to focus or he isn't doing what he is told to.

If you have the right kind of fighter telling him that you want to stop if the fight is a motivator. Imagine if that was Vargas or Corrales being told by his corner that the fight was going to be stopped. They'd be furious and unleash a serious can of whoop ass on their opponent in the next round.

Bollocks is right, my trainer hit me a slap and shouted my ear off, he didn't say "do you want me to stop it?"

Theres a difference in "I'm gonna stop this ****in fight if you don't do something!" and "Do you want us to stop the fight?"

I was wondering what would make them say that. The guy was in trouble but clearly in the fight. They were in a war and he could have used some words of wisdom not that. I think it was also a scare tactic on their part, but clearly the wrong choice.

They should have been telling him to move jab and box. Hold on if you get in trouble again. It really made no sense. I can't say that it would have changed the outcome. But it really seemed unprofessional to me.

If they were truly worried they would have been ready to stop the fight not just talk. When he took that last fall they would have been on the ringside waiving the towel.

Agree with thewoo statement as well. It all depends on the fighter. Sometimes those words act as motivation....But on the other hand his corner should know what to say to motivate him.

Read my post, Penalosa was told by Roach he was going to stop the fight,,, he said no, went out there and fought harder. A typical fighter is usually motivated by something like this...
