Francis Ngannou PPV buys (pay-per-view) and the Cameroonian's earnings from the boxing clash. The highly anticipated pay-per-view fight between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou in Saudi Arabia reportedly fell short of expectations, with under 70,000 PPV buys in the United States.7 Nov 2023
I don’t think it was that surprising as it was in the afternoon in the states, however that figure is low.
I think ppv is a dying model. It's starting to be a bit like a fax machine. Technology will move on. Hopefully subscription based instead.
Thanks Astro. Ive got a SKY Q box and an old Samsung TV. Never had a problem before but ive gone on the planner and tried to get it on TNT. Channel 494 and it says programmes coming soon. Looked at channel 490 and it says coming soon UFC 296. This is on Saturday. I'll be looking to see when THIS is available so I can check for the boxing on 23rd. Fingers crossed. But thanks mate. PS DAZN PPV says program coming soon.
I think you might be right. You ask somebody to pay 30 quid for a fight and they'll say no. But you ask them to pay 40 quid for the fight plus a 3 month subscription to some boxing app and suddenly it doesn't feel like such a rip off. Obviously the issue comes when you have multiple PPVs in the space of a few months and how you monetise that. I think in the end boxers earning 7 figures per fight will become the exception rather than the norm.
To be fair I think the Americans do ppv differently to us Brits. The whole neighborhood goes round to one person's house with a crate of beer and throws in 5 bucks to the host. That's why a ppv can be 70 dollars. Brits watch it more solely and pay only £20ish.
Didn't the US used to sell it to cinemas etc too who then sold tickets to watch it on the big screen, not sure if it still happens or not? Imagine that here ffs, for a card starting at 6 you'd end up with most people utterly steaming and on the packet by half 7/8 and there'd be scraps everywhere well before the main event. Shame really as I'd love to watch boxing on a big screen like that but it wouldn't go well with our drinking culture.
I would absolutely watch Fury-Usyk on a cinema screen. You're right it would be absolute bedlam and a total cokefest - so probably a better atmosphere than watching in Saudi!
