Berto was leading with his elbow a lot, I did not like that. But hi disguised it as a half jab at times, just raised his left arm, elbow first. Looked ugly. Anybody picked up on that? What are your thoughts?
I picked up on the elbow right away. Floyd loves the use of the elbow with his shell defence too. It's what frustrated Ortiz and led him to lose it.
I'm no Berto apologist. I always pegged him as more hype than substance. However, like most people, I thought Berto was the favorite against Guerrero, and like most people, I have 20/20 hindsight! When I think back to a couple of pre-fight interviews, I have to conclude that Berto, like most fans, underestimated The Ghost. Even if Berto had won, that would not change the fact that Berto is a media creation who was never as good as HBO wanted us to believe he is.
Berto tried to fight exactly like Floyd Mayweather, but there was only one problem. HE ISN'T SLICK! He even tried to make his mouth look like Floyd's. I guess the whole time Berto was out, he just watched The Floyd Mayweather box set and thought he was teaching himself how to be better. Berto has heart and deverves a lot of credit, but the Mayweather wanna-be stuff was nothing more than pathetic. EPIC FAIL for Berto.
I think we just figured Bertos chin wasnt made of glass. Guerrero hurt him badly with a not the hardest left hand youve seen from The Ghost. Also in the mid rounds guerrero was throwing some pittypat punches, then all of a sudden cracked Berto with a few hard shots and had him hurt and visibly shooken for the 3rd time in the fight. Guerrero dont hit THAT hard so Bertos chin is definitely questionable.
His fights are usually very entertaining. I like him, despite him obviously not being overly talented. His fun style, hand speed and explosiveness usually make for good scraps and so does his resilience after getting knocked down.
now I see why Berto hasnt faced a stellar opponent when he had the chance...The guy sucks, plain and simple...NO inside game, **** poor shoulder roll defense!atsch, he doesnt string his punches together when he needs to...HIs boxing IQ is too low...He doesnt know how to switch up his gameplan in the heat of the battle. The guy nothing but hype! RG did his thing and glad he got a the W.:good
It shows that he has very little to NO skill, despite having physical advantages, he easily gets hit.
Berto did some of his best work late in the fight when the Ghost had ran out of steam, honestly Berto had better stamina last night. He lost because skill wise he was completely outclassed, there was one point where he tried to push Guerrero into the ropes but the Ghost was wise and skilled enough to use footwork to avoid being trapped on the ropes. The guys either needs to make some big changes or retire.
That is what he should stick to, slug and speed. I was lmaofl when that straight left kept on getting through his all-of-a-sudden change of style Mayweather defense. If Berto would of just kept his old style of fighting he would of had a better chance.
Berto looked like **** his last 2 fights, he needs to take a year off from fighting the top guys and get a new trainer and find some ways to use athletic gifts to his advantage. BTW he is NOT Shane Mosley, who was a very skilled puncher, simply slugging with all the holes he has in his game will get him KTFO.
Agreed :good I think establishing a rhythm on the outside and being lighter on his feet will help him conserve energy when he explodes, instead of being easily cornered off balance and out of position on the inside, where he tires and gets reduced to fighting in spurts. I think he can improve his inside game, but he'd also need to go back his boxing sills. He's supposed to be a boxer-puncher and has turned into a slugger.
