Everything wrong with boxing today (Michael Benson)

I don’t think the percentage splits are the issue or they’d have made a counter offer.

Don’t forget Lee, Ryder and Monroe Jn as decent scalps alongside Junior and Lemieux. Smith would leather them but he’s a massive 168. Saunders has a world title belt and Smith/Canelo/GGG/Junior should all want that but the facts are they won’t go near him. He’s a nightmare to fight, southpaw, slick counter puncher who has the ability to make an opponent look bad. He’s also pretty horrible to deal with in the build-up with his confrontational verbals and his feral kids throwing shots right in the nads.

 

On another board the other year, there was an on going thread that had been running for some time regarding him lazily lifting other journalists work and posting it as his own, with no reference. I notice he does use references every so often now, but if I was a journalist who had gone to the hard work to get that material only for him to just lift it as his own I’d be pretty p****d off too.

 

So some other year on some other board someone accused him of this?

It’s proper ethics and etiquette in journalism to credit others if they break news UNTIL the subsequent journalist reporting it gets it confirmed on their own ... in which case they don’t have to do so. If CNN reports there’s an earthquake in California, Fox doesn’t have to credit CNN once they’ve contacted the proper authorities to authenticate the report for themselves.

He reports a lot of original news. As far as I’ve seen, he credits others when citing their reports if he can’t confirm it.

If there are multiple examples of him lifting other people’s work with no credit, I’d like to see links.

 

Honestly can't be arsed mate but it's long been known that Benson steals most of his content.

 

Seems to be a thing no one can prove but people accept it regardless. Which doesn’t make it true.

I just looked at dozens of his tweets and he cites who said what “Fury says he’s signed Wilder rematch” or “Eddie Hearn says ...” and often provides video. Or it’s “this fight has been announced” or “WBC announces ...” When it’s IFL video, he credits them.

Can’t see how that’s stealing.

 

Exactly this, @Saintpat . Can’t put it any more clear than nurological has done. He has a long history of it, i’m baffled as to why you’d so strongly remonstrate this.

 

If there’s a long history, a couple of examples should be easy. His twitter feed is there for all the world to see.

 

This is a recent thing, which i’m glad he now does. He wasn’t referencing anyone last year. It was blatant lifting of other people’s journalism.

 

People have posted numerous times on Twitter showing tweets almost lifted word for word by Benson. I really can't be bothered gping back through and finding things but it happens. Happened alot more last year and he got a lot of **** for it. He even argued his point for doing it to be fair.

 

I can’t be a***d mate. I don’t care enough to go and trawl through twitter posts but please do me a favour and don’t tell me that’s not enough without proof etc etc. I’m not making it up and neither is anyone else. He was lifting other people’s journalism.

 

Basically to me this is like saying ‘The guy down the street is a thief.”

And someone asks: “What did he he steal? Who did he steal it from? How do you know this?”

And the answer is: “I heard it on the internet. It must be true.” Without one single example of something you’re saying was rampant.

Let me ask you again — if it’s so well known, why can’t anyone provide a single example?

(EDIT: Just went back and spot checked several of his tweets and he credits others regularly — so let’s say he didn’t do that previously but he does so now ... what’s the beef with him putting up a tweet asking people how they feel about a 50/50 split and whether a fight should have been made? That’s the topic of this thread, which is, well, odd.)

 

Mate, with respect, if you were the type of poster who got up my nose or you was one of several posters berating me over something then I would go out my way to find the relevant evidence and present it to you. I’m honestly not making it up. I didn’t hear it from anyone else, I witnessed it many times with my own eyes.

He does reference stuff now instead of framing it as his own journalism, so I have no problem with him & I follow him on twitter.

 

He did use to do it regularly to be fair. He now credits but it’s usually the ones he would get in trouble with Sky, ESPN as he wouldn’t want to upset the boxing journos. But he does still use content from smaller providers without crediting. Ones that break info sometimes and that won’t have the means to chase him over it.

But to be fair he’s found a niche in pooling all the news stores into one place and seems to put a lot of time into it.

What with Brentwood work experience shills, Tyson Fury's man on the inside Eggman and now Benson, you can't move for industry types in here.

I'm almost certain Steve Bunce is on here. There's a poster who types almost exactly like he talks, even down to very idiosyncratic slang and phrasing.
