I haven’t found a lot on it other then word from mouth- it gets repeated a lot that Evander Holyfield lost to MM because of heart problems and the proof is in the rematch. Issue being Evander avenged it three years later against a different version of MM. Anyone got anything?
I think it’s pretty obvious. That type of juicing could probably **** up a lot of peoples hearts. Also, Holyfield wasn’t fighting like his usual self, even for an off night
Everyone was on roids, with no testing you end up with HWs that look like Weaver, Bruno ect. But I see your point, is there any talk of his heart prior to the fight?
Never heard anything about Holyfield s heart issues before the fight, and after he came back it seemed never to be mentioned again either hardly. Very Strange affair.
I think the loss was a combination of many factors. The steroid thing is obviously one of them but also he was coming of of some brutal physical fights with Bowe and others that will put him in a bit of a rut with this loss and his KO loss to Bowe in the third fight. He definitely was rejuvenated with the Tyson wins and his win over Moorer in the 2nd fight. Honestly, I think Moorer deserves credit for beating Holyfield the first go around. Too much focus on Steroid issues and not enough on that right jab from Moorer which scored all night long. The 2nd fight, Moorer decided to trade with Holyfield which was a HUGE mistake. At that point of Moorer's career he started putting on weight and became a plodding banger and abandoned the technical combination punching that made him so dangerous at heavyweight. He simply fought to his strength the first fight and to Holyfield's strength the 2nd one.
Moore definitely wasn’t his best self in the rematch but if I recall correctly, he wasn’t fighting Holyfield’s fight. Moore’s jab was still giving him problems and keeping Holyfield at bay for a good amount of time. Holy made a really smart move, which was to let Moorer get comfortable and then dart in with a strong combination out of nowhere. Moorer never fully recovered and got beat up after
Most likely, Holyfield had Arteriosclerosis and, in addition, had a problem with a noncompliant left ventricle. He was treated at Emory University, a heart-treatment center. It no doubt affected his fights in 1994 and 1995 (Moorer, Mercer, Bowe). The treatment and whatever medicine(s) he received seem to have produced positive results by 1996 and 1997 (Czyz, Tyson, Tyson, Moorer), and thereafter. Holyfield is my favorite fighter and I'm very familiar with his career. I have things to do today, so I'm not looking on Google for links right now. I'm sure confirmation on most of these facts are easy to find. If anyone wants links and can't find them, let me know and I'll look when I get back home.
AFAIK Holyfield was treated/diagnosed/checked out at the Mayo clinic and the results where classified as " confidential"..........and then everybody went radio silent........and according to Holyfield himself he was "healed" by a Minister of some church the name escapes me right now.............there is even video footage of it. Evan Fields was the biggest and most advanced PED cheat of almost two decades and it is safe to say that his sometimes subpar performances were related to not getting his cycle right...................I am calling BS on the heart stuff , it was washed under the table by the Boxing commission, the HBO propaganda machine swept it aside and ultimately it was never ever brought up again............REAL heart issues just dont go away especially in Pro athletes. Probably had to switch to different PED's and voila, the "heart" problem went away........and the faith Healer did the rest.
This line of reasoning is always dangerous and faulty. Its convenient to excuse any bad losses by saying the rematch is "proof" the fighter had an off night or was sick when it could simply be that they made better adjustments in fight #2. I think it gets thrown out too much and is also a way to diminish the other guy's win.
Holyfield would not have been able to remain a top level boxer with arteriosclerosis. It’s almost irreversible.
From Wiki: “Evander Holyfield was hospitalized after the fight for dehydration and a rotator-cuff injury. While at the hospital, a kidney bruise was found and he was given large amounts of liquid to help treat the injury. However, Holyfield was soon found to have a heart problem after his lungs filled due to his heart not being able to pump the fluids out.” Severe dehydration can likely account for the heart problem (I.e. potassium imbalance). His performance likely comes down to a good effort by Moorer, a shoulder injury, and possibly being on the wrong end of a PEDs cycle. Holyfield claimed that Benny Hinn, the corrupt faith healer, healed his heart. That should be evidence in itself that he had no serious heart problem going into the fight.
This is a very interesting and helpful post. I always had a problem with Holy's claims of heart problems, as I believe No Neck mentioned earlier it would have been impossible for him to fight at all if some of the misdiagnoses had been true. He lost to Moorer and Bowe III fair and square. The amazing thing is, he rebounded to claim his biggest victories after those losses. I love Holy, and spent a lot of time wanting to believe his heart ailment, but something always stuck in my craw about it. No Neck came to the rescue.
