These days anyone 154lbs and over wears 10lb gloves and below that the gloves are 8oz. But it's not always been that way. I read the other day that 6oz gloves were used for Fullmer-Robinson 2 where Fullmer was knocked out by a brutal blow from Robinson. Fullmer said he would never fight wearing 6oz gloves ever again. Possibly implying part of the reason he was so badly ko'd was because of the gloves. The impact damage would certainly be worse with smaller gloves The issue is I don't know what size the gloves were in different eras. I wonder if there's always been the rule that you can only use the same pair of gloves for 2 fights or if in the past this much more lax. I suspect the latter. Which would mean the glove would protect the hand less but also more force could be delivered. In terms of impact in fights, smaller gloved seem to deliver greater damage. Ray Mercer using an MMA 4oz glove scored 1 punch KOs that I've never seen in boxing. However they don't protect the hands as well. If you hit certain parts of the head you'll damage your hand with little to protection. The same with if you throw wider hooks So what were the boxing glove sizes in differing eras?
It started off with 2-4 Oz gloves in the early 1900s. Over time it got bumped up to 6 and then 8 for heavyweights around the 70's onwards, and eventually it got bumped up to 10 oz for anyone over welterweight around the 90's-2000's. I'm planning on making a few threads on gloves in the near future, so stay tuned for that
