You see, you find on the internet, and even on gyms, some coaches saying that "you should throw left hook with your palm down" for power and whatever.... Many of these coaches don't actually watch boxing and they are too cloistered to quirks like these that are actually not of any importance.... (like the feet turning or whatever when you throw the hook, as if that was the important part of the hook) What works in actual figthing is unbeatable, and in that guys throwing left hooks with their palm down is small, it´s just not as pratical... but I ramble too much.... What are the examples we have, in the history of the sport, of guys that actually did well throwing left hooks with their palm down ? I remember Shane Mosley doing it very well. Did Golovkin do it often ? He did, right ?
I can't remember a time I ever threw a left hook with my palm any way but down. Frazier and Foster certainly threw it more like that than any other way. I guess I saw Tommy Morrison land a few with palm kind of facing out. I guess we're not sure your original assertion has validity outside the fact that the basic, most prevalent left hook is thrown with the palm down. I'm not sure whom urged you to throw it other ways to the relative exclusion of that basic technique... Leg drive is a hugely important part of an effective left hook, and unless you feel like straining your calves and/or lower leg tendons it's advisable to twist your feet as you throw it.
The feet turning is important - it uses little energy to do something properly so you might as well. it seems to shift the weight from what foot to the other more naturally. Just feeling it now throwing a left hook without moving my foot feels like it would damage my knee. You may also find that your head doesn’t move as much throwing the hook the way you describe because head movement starts at the feet, I see it as a mistake as head movement should always be a ready decision when throwing a punch.
No Sir, Frazier did not throw left hooks with his palm down in a horizontal form. He threw hooks with thumb pointing up more than anything.... I was talking this: https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/hH5...chorus_asset/file/19342437/1185162078.jpg.jpg This content is protected How do I embed pictures in this mother****er ?
Nah. Look at the best guys throwing left hooks, what matters is your body rotation... your feet won't do nothing per se.
I’ve seen many smart people call it a preference. My coach at the moment throws it palm towards the face. For longer hooks, I find it’s more comfortable the further out you take the hook but when you want to throw it short I think palm down, but that’s a matter of comfort for me.
It seems to me that you actually needs more space in order to throw left hooks with your "palm down", all the guys that threw left hooks this way (Canelo, Mosley, for example) when they did it this way, it was a long hook. Short left hooks are almost always threw with your thumb up. I guess !!
Sore knees, playing around with it a bit maybe the head movement part is very debatable my mistake - but I don’t want to figure it out, I’m in my twenties and it hurts my knees.
Ah you got it ! Nailed. Yes. Right ? I think the boxing gloves are also a problem regarding this, because I see MMA guys throwing hooks with their palm down more than actual boxers, now that I got to think about... I actually now am thinking here...... it does requieres more time, that mili-second that you turn your first may be the moment where your opponent sees it coming !
I've never really concentrated on watching any of the older Foreman's fights except maybe the Moorer fight at one time or another, but I remember thinking that the younger Foreman used to throw his power punches with his arms held parallel to the canvas.
Depends on range of motion and level as far as I was taught. 1. Imagine a line horizontally equal to your shoulder 2. Equal to your shoulder line and below to the body all hooks should be Palm in while keeping your throwing arm as close to 90 Degrees at the elbow. 3. All hooks over the shoulder line become more palm down depending on range and could easily become a chopping righthand or over hand right if range has be closed.
Most Eastern Euros throw hooks with there palm down. I don't recall GGG throwing with the palm down and Frazier never did.
