Yup, Buddy Baer left hooked him halfway out of the ring ,he dusted himself off and resumed as though nothing had happened. He had the sangfroid of Salvador Sanchez.

Yup, it’s what a fighter does when he is put down that matters mate.

Joe Louis was an aggressive fighter who took some risks and fought at the highest level for as long as anyone in the history of the game. Of course he was going to be decked and or hurt at some stage.

Every other great heavyweight who fought at the highest level for a very long time by historical standards ( Johnson, Louis, Ali, Foreman, Holmes, Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis and Wlad ) were either kayoed or at least badly hurt in a big fight.

    Cheers.

Demoting, you mean? I'm not basing my opinion of Louis's punch resistance solely on his losses or his knockdowns, but more by the way he reacted to shots throughout his career, and from what sorts of opponents. It's not the fact that he got knocked down here and there, which can happen for any number of reasons, but by the fact that he was more than once hurt against light punching fighters like Conn. Conn made Louis's legs dip and had him staggering around the ring from a few well landed punches. That's not something that can be attributed to balance or being caught cold.

It's ultimately not any one thing I use to come to the conclusion I do, but rather the whole body of evidence, both for and against his punch durability. With Foreman a lot of the good rep he built up came in his comeback, long after Zaire. With Louis we don't have any comparable 'body of work.'

Louis dried out for the Conn fight to get under 200lbs,he hardly ate the day before the fight an didn't drink anything.
In his autobiography he said he "felt like **** ,"when he got in the ring.
Perhaps this may have affected his punch resistance?
Conn's ko stats are probably misleading.
Only two men ko'd Bob Pastor.Louis and Conn.
    Pastor v Conn
Pastor was counted out after taking a left hook to the body. He was also knocked down for a 7-count at the bell in the 9th and for a 9-count in round 12
Jack Sharkey had a **** poor ko% ,yet he had Dempsey groggy at times and stopped guys like Godfrey and Wills.

Excuses. Even if Louis wanted to drop a few pounds the day before the fight, he could have easily re-hydrated after the way in as everyone does today.

Odd, I've seen you question Carnera's KO over Jack Sharkey before, now you're arguing he was a puncher! Oh, of course, he shook one of your idols in Dempsey.

Conn was never a puncher and KO'd no heavyweight before he met Joe Louis.

Would you say the same for Wlad? He holds the record for champions not going down, 10+ years I think. He also fought the best of his time with 25 title defenses and owns the record holding the title for a period of time. 12 years, 0 months, 0 days. In addition Wlad hold the record for most opponents beaten in title defenses at 23.

You might think such a long title run = a good chin.

No--Wlad does not have a good chin, see how easy that is to admit.

I doubt the guys who stunned or floored Louis would do the same vs Wlad, as his defense was much better than Louis' and his jab more of a controlling factor. Wlad's feet are also quicker. In fact some of Louis' title opponents would never earn a shot vs Wlad, they would be fodder to the other in the top ten.

They are not excuses they are comments Louis made in his book.I've no interest in what your opinion of them is,you are a persistent and compulsive Louis detractor.

    I wasn't aware Sharkey ko'd Carnera, was there a third fight I missed?lol
Nowhere in my post have I said Sharkey was a puncher, nor Conn, what I have said is their ko stats are probably misleading.
Get someone who has passed 5th grade to explain my post to you,it will save you making a **** of yourself yet again!

    Dorazio

    Pastor
    Knox
    Before he fought Louis.

Got any more jokes like that?

Joe had a decent chin at best, but I wonder how that chin would've held up against Lem Franklin and Roscoe Toles.

Franklin was a very good puncher who,if he didn't get you out quickly usually shot his bolt and was stopped himself.
He and Louis would be exciting while it lasted but, in 45 fights Franklin was ko'd 8 times, including by moderate puncher Bob Pastor.
You can equally ask, how would his chin have held up against the Brown Bombers?

Who is the best opponent Toles stopped?
    Gus Dorazio? Middleweight Nate Bolden?

Oh if a book says it, it must be true. Louis being weight drained was not an issue. Conn made him look bad period. Carnera Ko'd Sharkey, I fixed that but my point stands you felt I was a suspect KO.

Franklin won something like 17 fights in a row. Louis didn't pick him for a title shot. In his 26 title defenses Louis only selected two African American's. That's it. One had a vision problem and had no business being in the ring, the other beat him on a fair score card.

Franklin vs. Louis could have been interesting. I'd pick Louis, but if Franklin landed hard, anything is possible.

    Several books say it actually.
Of course you can opt to call Louis a liar if you so wish.

Nothing to say about Conn racking up 4 kos over heavyweights BEFORE he fought Louis?

Yes, I do think you are suspect ,highly suspect!lol

    Thanks for the laugh!
