I always hear about how great this "move" is. Besides Dempsey himself, who else has pulled this move off? Any examples? I know some people say Donaire did it in one of his fights, but it was a semi-Dempsey Roll since he was doing uppercuts instead of hooks or something like that. Anyway, any good examples you know of?
I don't know if this is what people call the "Dempsey Roll" (I've never heard the phrase to be honest), but Nonito Donaire's knockout of Vic Darchinyan was similar to what Dempsey used to do in terms of turning your body to avoid a punch in a way that the turn itself leads to a hook with the full weight of your body behind it.
I don't really know any examples of the Dempsey Roll. Outside of Jack Dampsey and Nonito Donaire but as you say he didn't really do a Dempsey roll.
I can't say I've ever watched that cartoon, and as far as I know, the "Dempsey Roll" didn't exist until that cartoon. But it was a Dempsey-esque move. The difference with Dempsey is he ALWAYS kept his body low and was constantly moving in a way to set up that hook, whereas Donaire just happened to do it when he saw an opening.
Peek-a-boo defense and constant motion to avoid the attacker's punch while you counter the opening = Jack Dempsey and Mike Tyson [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32dHzQR9OKg[/ame] That cartoon also "sampled" Floyd Patterson's "Gazelle Punch" [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viB3KR7zafQ[/ame]
Sendo's smash is based on Donovan Ruddock smash. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNo8nXD3xoc[/ame]
Mike Tyson is probably the best bet to see a nice Demsey roll. I can't think of a specific instance, but he would roll under and come up with a hook quite often.
