Clay/Ali was out on his feet against Cooper and would have been KOed if the bell didn’t save him.

The second round of the Lyle - Shavers bout. The left hook Shavers dropped him with was in the last 10 seconds of the round. Lyle got up but was dead to the world. There was no way he could have survived another punch if not for that bell.

Disagree. I was at the fight. Lyle had his legs. The guy that was not getting up after he went down was Earnie.

Norton against Ledoux. Almost everyone thought the ref had stopped it & Scott was the victor. Fortunate there was not a riot.

I don't know, man, it's hard to disagree with someone at the fight, but on film it looks like the only thing holding Lyle up was that corner he was in.

Here's the first 2 rounds. He walked to his corner OK, but I just can't see him handling another shot from Shavers. Again, maybe I'm wrong since you were there. But on film and what I know of both fighters, I wouldn't be betting the house on his survival if there was another 10 seconds in the round.

The thing is---Lyle was the rarest of breeds that could fight and was comfortable with his back on the ropes. How many heavies actually are? Usually it's the beginning of the end. But he beat the count and got to his corner. Lyle was in top condition and recovered very well in that minute rest. Without being in top condition--and lots of guys are not--he gets stopped early in the next round. And Earnie telegraphs--anyone in the arena could figure out what he was doing--so it's always possible Earnie gets beat to the punch when he has a guy hurt. Or, he misses because he telegraphs.

But Lyle was comfortable there. And he had his legs. Like I said earlier, the guy that went down real bad and did not get up for a long time was Shaver's. He went out like Tate did against Weaver.

And it was a long long time before they put Earnie in with another hitter.

It can be argued the guy getting closer to stopped by Shaver's was Larry Holmes. He had nothing and just covered up on the ropes and let Earnie wail away until the bell sounded. A different ref & maybe that bout is stopped.

Debatable one but Ali-Frazier 2 round 2 when Ali wobbled Frazier and the ref stepped in and ended the round after 2 minutes.

Foreman Lyle round 4. Foreman had his a legs a little as he walked back to his corner but he went down so hard at the end of that round I think Lyle was one good punch away from winning.
