...about this mayweather v marquez fight...and some comments i am reading.. some people are posting {and on facebook} about how bad this fight is, that mayweather should be killed by gunfire for weighing 146..that mayweather took an easy option with marquez and he's a disgrace to boxing for doing it. ..and so on.. i'm posting here as i think most of the level headed posters are found over here... this is a great fight...we should be grateful that we are getting to see two of the best boxers in the world compete tonight. boxing has a lot of knockers, people saying its a dying sport...we dont need people {just my opinion of course} slagging fights like this..we dont need boxing 'fans' throwing stones at the sport, hurting it from the inside... yes, mayweather is naturally bigger, no getting away from it...but its not as much as some people make out..you'd think mayweather was king kong... there have been countless fights where one boxer has been bigger than the other...and as we see with manny, sometimes the 'david' does beat the 'goliath'. mayweather is making an easy payday they say..and its disgraceful... well fair play to mayweather i say..the more money he makes, then good on him...he's coming from a 2 year layoff and is taking this non title bout against one hell of a good opponent. these are two of the best boxers our sport has to offer in the world...we should be delighted to see this tonight...we should celebrate it. and...i am NOT talking here about folks debating how mayweather should win easy because of his size advantage..no, nothing wrong in debating that, and i agree he will probably win...i am talking about the people who are posting all over the place about how this is terrible for boxing and mayweather is a disgrace...thats killing the sport from the inside that. for those who like to mouth off about how the fight is disgraceful, then its easy...go to bed...imagine the fight isnt happening...forget about it... i'll watch it...i'll enjoy it...i'll clap both boxers, two of the top 3 best boxers that my favourite sport has to offer right now...i'll celebrate it...i'll have my sons up at 5am watching it and respecting both boxers entering the ring. dont slag the sport so much..it dont help and its not cool. sorry...rant over. maybe the above dont make sense...i dunno.
All very well and good however boxing DOESN'T need matchups like this ! Mayweather's return is good for boxing no doubt about it ! Mayweather returning in a catchweight 9lbs above the weight his opponent has ever fought at, and then coming in 2lbs over the stipulated catchweight limit IS NOT GOOD FOR BOXING. Floyd cannot have it both ways. He cannot keep telling everyone that he is indeed himself a small Welterweight and then refuse to come in at the cacthweight intended. If he wanted a tune up fight before a potential 'Mega-Bout' with Pacquiao then he should have gone for Berto :good So he wins this, he then beats Pacquiao. All he's achieved is beating up two men who were considerably smaller than him, and still avoided fighing somebody with his natural body size. If Pac beats Cotto convincingly it still isn't great coz he's forcing Cotto's hand the way Floyds forcing Juan's. I'm still gonna watch the fight and I still respect the supreme talent both men have. And i'm still excited about seeing Floyd return to the sport. Whichever way you look at this Doug.ie its a ***** move and he shouldn't be commended in any way shape or form for it :deal All I hope now is that its a good fight and Marquez comes out of the ring afterwards a healthy man :good
Great rant, Doug:good. It's still an interesting fight, IMO, but I still (sadly) see a one-sided UD for PBF. As I said yesterday, I never once heard JMM or PBF say the fight was at 144 either and that seems to be backed up in this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FsZRKZZ3GM Anyway, don't worry about the idiots on the general- they need an excuse half the time to take swipes at the very sport they all claim to love:think.
I think a lot of the posts on the General Forum are symptomatic of their blind, anti-Floyd agenda. This current period of boxing has been defined by silly, and needless celebrity catchweight fights, however this one is really intriguing. Floyd is coming back after a near two year layoff, whilst Marquez is absolutely desperate to gain his revenge over Pacquiao after being ripped off twice, and was perfectly willing to take this fight in order to secure that contest - it isn't as if some numbnut at HBO put a gun to his head and forced this one.... whilst there could have been a few easier comeback fights for Floyd that could have been set up - Berto for the WBC, for instance. With Mayweather though, unless he is fighting every six weeks against big punching heavyweights there will always be a negative agenda. I like how Floyd has been very respectful of JMM (unlike Sky) in the build up to this one, and offered the credit he deserves for an excellent career.
Not a perfect matchup but hey its a fight and a very interesting one at that. Haters are the biggest fans in my book. Nice post :good
2 great fighters. :yep 2 of the best counter punchers of all time for me. :bbb u could argue mayweather is picking on a little guy. but those same fans wanna see floyd in with pac. a little guy.
Wasn't aware anyone was being forced to do anything. What's the nature of the coercion? Kidnapped relatives? Waterboarding?
The WORLD lightweight champion against the former p4p World number one.... **** match... ****ing wining *******s. ha ha There is only about 5 better matches that can be made in boxing right now. People will whine about anything. Anyone see Calzaghe exposed last night? Also people forget Floyd started as a featherweight. He's not a big Welter. He could probably still do light welter but preferes to be muscular.
Cobbler you ****** would you have expected Marquez to pull out of the biggest fight and biggest Payday of his career along with the greatest exposure on the Friday night when Floyds team offered the penalty incentive ?? What does he do then ? Pac has got a fight lined up as has Cotto, and no other fight out there will get him anything like this one will. I can't ****ing believe people are defending Floyd on here ?
Jeff if Floyd is a small Welter then he should have been able to make 144 with ease. Regardless of whether he wanted to come in with extra 'muscle' or not he's a fanny for doing it. He already has every advantage over Marquez why does he need to take this **** with the weight too !
Sme ****ing ****** on the General is trying to defend Floyd by claiming that Juan has the advantage in handspeed and skills over Floyd ? WTF are some people for real ?
Well exactly. It's the biggest fight out there for Marquez financially and in terms of prestige. He's not being forced into it. He could be back at lightweight fighting Paulus Moses if he wanted to. Why wouldn't people want to see this fight? It's interesting that you seem to be taking the completely opposite view to Cotto fighting the naturally smaller Pacquiao though...
I think the reactions to Mayweather's weight have been hilariously over-the-top. Personally, I'm excited about the fight, I don't think its a total mis-match and I'm glad its happening. But... I would have prefered to have seen Pacquaio-Marquez 3, and Mayweather-Cotto. But whatever. :verysad
Cotto was fighting at a catchweight like this was supposed to be at. And also Cotto struggles like hell with his weight. If Cotto comes in at 145 then fair enough. If he doesn't it still not as bad because we all know 145 is gonna drain him. My problem with that is that he's being forced to put the belt on the line when he wants the fight at 147. I dont think thats on. And the only problem I have with this is Floyd not making 144. I think it would have been pretty easy for him. If he makes 144, he still holds all the aces so it pisses me off he has just shown complete disregard for Juan. there's a big chance here that Juan could be seriously injured tonight :-( Floyd has kept all contracts for this out of public view because he never intended to make the weight. He nevr handed it to the Nevada State Athletic Comission until the very last moment he could either. Then on Friday he pulls this stunt. Marquez wouldn't pull out of it and neither would golden boy with it being a near $100m event ! This gets cancelled Marquez gets a 10% fee and a compensation fee and GBP get a compo fee too what the **** is that to the money they stand to make from the event if it goes ahead ??? Listen lads I love Floyd and hope he beats Pac,Cotto, Margarito, Mosely or whoever else he faces. I'm stating though that this is a ***** move and people shouldn't defend it.
