I think the fact that he did have some defensive skill is the only reason Joe didn't fall in the first four or five rounds of FOTC. Ali, though never a great puncher, was definitely stepping into more than a few of those punches. He literally batted the hell out of him more than once in that fight.

Frazier pissed was a monster. Too bad he didn't feel that way 'bout George...or in the 2nd Ali fight. It was definitely back for TiM.

He definitely lost that insane hunger and drive after FOTC. I wish I knew what is was and I never would have asked him that at the gym either. Joe had as lot of pride and even though he was very kool ya kinda knew what you could ask him about and what you left alone

You are not alone. Boxing Expert Moontan states "Frazier was much harder to hit although Tyson in his prime was very difficult to hit."

I believe he was one of if not the hardest HW to hit statistically...swarmers/pressure fighters like Frazier Marciano and Tyson don’t get the credit they deserve on the defensive end (maybe Tyson does not the other two).

You think that FOTC was a demonstration of Frazier's defensive skills? If anything, I think it exposed some of his shortcomings. He ate a ton of very clean punches that fight.

Very true...Tyson did have good defensive skills at one time with the peek a boo style but that style has more of a set rythem. Fraziers head movement had a funky rythem all it's own. Alot of the shots Frazier took that looked clean were only partially landing they were actually just clipping pieces of him. Sliding off. If all these shots that people claim were landing flush he never would have been able to continually move forward and reloading punches. If you pay attention to Joe's fights it's easy to see.

I think I know where you're getting that, but imo Spinks obviously lost that fight. Undefeated on paper: absolutely.

Holmes is a two time champion, at least to me. And I'd bet cash more than a few other people here think the same.

No offense, I completely sympathize with your position.

Now thats a low blow. Ali never gives credit especially after a fight. One he lost none the less. Ali is on record many times stating not only was Frazier the hardest to hit cleanly he also hit the hardest..you heard correctly on both accounts. I've not even read up alot on Ali so these quotes should be very very easy to find.
    Please!!!

BTW unofficially Spinks lost something like 10-5 unofficially on press row. A huge huge robbery as he was dominated the entire fight by a past it Holmes who mustered up one last hurrah here. Holmes was shot by 84. Those who followed him could see that clearly.

Frazier a slow starter vs Tyson a fast starter who happens to hit much harder and takes a better punch. Hmmm...Let me think about this one for a moment. Tyson via KO inside 4 rounds.

To me the last fight Holmes was at his peak was Cobb...I think even that late in his era Larry would have punished the hell out of practically all of the other ATG heavyweights. Watch closely and imagine pretty much any other heavyweight of the time taking that. His last sign of greatness was in the ninth round of the Witherspoon fight imo, and he was truly a great champion to have pulled off the win (yeah, I completely disagree with people whom think Tim won that fight, both he and Carl Williams simply didn't do enough to win the world heavyweight championship).

One of the things that surprised me after the Spinks fight is that the judges didn't give Larry the benefit of a doubt and let him retain the title. I mean shoot, look at a couple of the highly dubious calls they gave to Ali in his late era. At the same time, I had Michael ahead by two points and to this day believe he really did beat him (though he never once even hurt Larry). Michael really took his show-a-bunch-of-different-faces-and-take-away-the-jab approach to just-enough success.

The second fight was a unanimous decision that Holmes was outright robbed of imo. Spinks was the more than clear loser.
