I have thought about this fight often. Liston's power against Marciano's determination and strength, but Liston would be too big I think. It would be a test on Marciano that is for sure.. Marciano against Patterson is another great fight.

I know this thread asks for Expert opinions - but that’s unfair discrimination so I’m gonna give my opinion anyway.

67” vs 84”. Wow. 17” pull. almost a foot and half. Can Rocky T-Rex burrow in to get close enough to do damage to Sonny B. Bear? And even when inside, does Rocky cope with Liston’s own inside game? Even up close and personal, Sonny could still throw ‘em short and powerful.

Or, will Liston successfully keep it at range, his preferred mode of fighting - and will the fight end up looking something like this:-

So much wrong to start. Listons defense was not not better then Marcianos and we have the stats to prove so. Marciano by a bit actually.

they were both adaptable id probably put that at a draw.

Chin? Have to give it to Marciano. Why on earth you’d give it to Liston who was stopped and staggered is beyond me. He had a good chin just saying.

Wish they would have met in their primes! What a fight.

One thing people don’t realize about Liston is his stamina was incredible! Not only did he punch a lot with power but he could throw constantly. Probably about even in the stamina department.

so both were top five fighters imo (I know some don’t have either there that’s fine it’s all subjective). Could go either way but I tend to slight edge Liston here just because I think boxer punchers give Marciano the toughest time. Like Walcott and Moore did although he adapted quite well to both but Liston was a different animal. If Liston has the heart to go a long ways he could win it if it fails him then Marciano.

Marciano was hard to hit because he dipped his head below his opponents waist however there is no way a fighter with a 67 inch reach can beat a fighter with an 84 inch reach, Liston was too big and tyhere`s no way Marciano could get under that long jab to land his shots.

Saying Marciano never lost is the reason he'd beat Liston is ridiculous, I guess Mayweather would beat up Duran at 135 then move up to 147 and take out Ray Robinson because, hey! he never lost. Marciano was an incredibly conditioned boxer with immense toughness, grit and determination. But Rocky coming right at Sonny Liston with a height , weight and at least 15 inch reach disadvantage is a recipe for an execution. He can't just swarm in on Liston ,Sonny will straighten him up with the hardest jab in heavyweight history and then pulverize him with uppercuts and hooks. If you drew up a fighter on paper to get destroyed by Liston it'd look like Rocky.

Liston along with Foreman are the two fighters I think Rocky has absolutely zero chance against

Maybe you never saw Tua, Qawi, Tyson, Frazier, Toney fight. Those little fellas w little reaches did alright for themselves. And it’s most commonly listed at 68” reach. I don’t expect you to be honest. Marciano leaning to his waist level is legal in the pros. Stop with your nonsense.

Agree with your point about Liston being too big, on point re: Rocky v Floyd not sure if you are aware or have read ( as I have ) Rocky contemplated a comeback not long after Patterson beat Moore, went back into the gym, main aim was to lose lots of weight , but then come to the conclusion that Patterson was was too quick and too fast for him, so decided to stay in comfortable retirement , interesting. stay safe guys.

    I will say this:

Liston's era was only a couple years removed from Marciano's title reign. People sometimes act as if Liston is a superheavyweight from the 90s.

Sonny's defense was leagues better than Marciano's. Rocky face paid the price every fight. He was just not an elite athlete, undergifted, bad balance... a good little plugger who emerged at time the heavyweight quality was at a low point. The field was crowded with used up old-timers, little guys trying to go up in weight for the brass ring and a collection of mediocre white hopes. But credit to the Rock (I do give him credit), he managed his career very well. Got in, took advantage of the lay of the land and got out when monsters crowded the horizon.

A good little plugger who overachieved. What's wrong with that?

Marciano performed better in other sports than Liston (unless armed robbery is a sport.)

That aside, since when did being a better athlete become decisive in boxing? Frazier and an aging Ali weren't close to the athletes that Norton, Shavers, or Weaver were. Heck, Ali was starting to show early signs of Parkinsons. But Ali and Frazier got the title, while those athletic guys...didn't.

Lol what’s wrong is when faced with cold hard facts you come in with your crazy imagination. Marcianos defense was better. It isn’t an argument it’s a statement.
Back to the race thing Seamus? Thought u were over that anti white guy stuff. Layne wasnt a white hoper neither was Lastarza or Matthews or Don. Layne being the best of them best Walcott before he was champ and Charles. He also beat Satterfield who beat several number one contenders over his years. The other three were never thought of as more then just ok contenders of the era.

Qawi would never have won a world title at heavyweight, I don`t even know how high he got up the rankings, none of the cruisers or light heavies that Qawi beat had Liston`s power or reach, no way could Qawi beat a fighter with an 84 inch reach, Tyson weighed 220, he was far more muscled than Marciano and maybe Liston too, Tyson was jacked.
