Actually I consider that to be a great deal of projection...some people hate Marciano and try to diminish his stellar and unassailable accomplishments because he was white. Haters going to hate. The Rock is still, and will always be, undefeated.
His pigmentation may have mattered to those rooting for him at the time. I don't think it matters much to any of us 65 years later.
well they say he Ran nearly every single day for the 10 years he was at the Top. he used an oversize Heavy Bag for power and strength & fitness (KEY), when most didn't he fought most of the Top guys and WON he Defended his title willingly and of course he retired undefeated could he have done more, probably, who couldn't? Today many, many fighters barely even fight, never mind meet whom they should... He was a worthy Champion among some Kings, that's pretty darn good. Maybe some of the (h)istorians can offer more, and the Researches even more yet.
It may be a slight paraphrase as I have not heard it in 30 years, but that was the long and short of it.
Anything in his book which is untrue? He has transcripts of Marciano's courtmartial and mug shots of him when he was convicted.I'd call that, " Truthraking".
We have a saying on ESB. You adore the adorable and you floor the floorable. Ask Luffley, he knows all about it. Mostly the second part of it.
He was no saint but he wasn’t some no heart criminal either. He was beloved by the boxing world for his generosity and helpfulness. He helped find retired boxers jobs and gigs after retirement. Often pressuring those mafia friends to give jobs he couldn’t take to down and out fighters like Louis or Charles or Walcott who couldn’t find work like that as black champs. Those men cried at his funeral and for good reason he was their friend. Says something about the guy.
Marciano was so miserly about cash he was known as," America's Guest," He got Willie Pep some gigs, and I read Rocky helped Charles ,but I have never heard, he helped either Louis or Walcott ,Louis was part of the IBC after he retired and Walcott opened a restaurant. How do you know they cried at his funeral, where you there? Lets not go down the "saintly ,"road again.
