i just had mine today with a girl who had been practicing southpaw but usually spars me orthodox. First round, i throw jabs notice im missing alot, i'm thinking in my head somethings really akward. I throw a right hand but something feels really off, i look down and i thought to myself what the hell she's turned southpaw. I knew what to do against a southpaw, the basic thing, step outside of their lead food but i was just so clueless, i was hitting air trying to jab. She would stay outside of my range too, so when i threw a right hand it was completely akward and i'd hit air. I ended up getting backed up into a corner for most of the round and taking a bunch of left hooks :-( the first time i can say i really got lit up and had no idea what to do. Then she turned orthodox for the other 3 and i did what i usually did, practice defence, hit lightly but enough to earn respect and threw punches in bunches, counters etc but the first round really ****ed with me. :bbb
Going in I had been told not to let a southpaw hypnotize me, to see his punches coming...I got hypnotized and watched his right jab directly into my nose, twice. At which point my nose started bleeding profusely. This was not unusual for my nose: At this point I was in and out of the gym and, while out, profoundly abusing my nose in various and sundry ways. So it bled, good thick, deep, red blood. Then he hit me with a left hand, and it wasn't as hard as his right. I started going to his left, getting under it and hitting his body and finally hit him a real sweet left hook, which was my best punch at the time.
The first southpaw I sparred with was around my height, but slimmer and quicker then me. He tried to slip my **** a lot, waiting for me to throw the punches. I got pretty fed up with that **** and squared up more on him.. came in deep on him and let the hands fly.. punches in bunches. Try to slip them all your slick *******! Actually.. I've never really messed with an aggressive southpaw.. all of them have always tried working off the back off and playing the waiting game...
I got my ass kicked the first time I sparred a southpaw. He was lighter than me and his punches didn't hurt, but I got slapped like a "pandereta". Think of DLH-Trinidad in the first 8 rounds...
I was confused and frustrated. Couldn't corner him and couldn't see his left hand no matter what. I ended up feinting straight rights then smashing him with left hooks as hard as I could to knock him off balance to my right so I could step around. He blocked them all but it kept me from getting ****ed up. Tried pressure but on the inside I couldn't get my hook off to the body and kept getting that left to my head. It really sucked. It still sucks. I hate southpaws. I know how to fight them properly now but it still sucks because everything's backward, none of it is muscle memory, and I have to concentrate 110 percent the whole time. And I still usually get hurt.
