"I've been told CBS and Showtime were ready to do it and so was Haymon. But to make it viable Floyd was going to have to take less money than his guarantee and balked. I do not know if that is certain but it sounds right to me and seems like one of the reasons the fight took so long to announce. You dont announce a major PPV fight 38 days out. But it was delayed and that may have been one of the reasons as they went back and forth." - Dan Rafael

So, basically, everyone on every side wanted it to be free; however, when they told Mayweather he'd have to take a little less money, he decided against it.

Apparently Al Haymon was never mentioned once during the press conference either. Mayweather and company always thanks Haymon during the pressers, but not a word this time. Kinda unusual. I wonder if there's strife. It'd make sense because there was word Haymon didn't like the idea of this fight being on PPV. :think

    Makes sense.

But why would anyone reasonably expect Floyd to take anything less than his contractually guaranteed figure?

Well Showtime/CBS apparently care for the fans even less.

People will inevitably suggest the idea that he would have had a chance to "give back to the fans", which obviously has never been a priority of his so the expectation of such unprecedented generosity would be rather dubious.

I'd think that the chance of greater exposure fighting on CBS might have been intriguing to him to further market his brand.

But why blame Floyd for "not giving back to the fans" and not also blame CBS/Showtime? And even more so?

I suppose the blame ought to been spread around as you're suggesting.

However, I think it's easier for boxing fans to blame the boxer than it is to blame a network or a tv executive.

Particularly a boxer who partly markets himself as "being his own boss" and "calls his own shots."

But on the same token, CBS could surely find a way to raise the necessary money, and think of it as an investment.

    Floyd's career is winding down.

The networks will, one would assume, be in the business for the long haul. They have more to potentially gain than Floyd by finding a way to make the numbers work without short changing the main attraction (Floyd) of money they already guaranteed him.

Not an investment if this is his deal done for. It would be a possible investment if he was going to give them another one down the line

    :huh

Floyd isn't the only boxer out there. He's the biggest attraction right now. Showcasing him on network TV would be good for the sport, and open opportunities for future stars to follow suit.

But perhaps this is all just wishful thinking on my part.

Very, very expensive advert for something they aren't likely to see a sizable return on. Oscar showcased himself on network TV (in a similarly horrible mismatch against Forbes), might have been nice for Floyd to have done the same. $38,000,000 to advertise a sport that they don't seem to give two ****s about...
