Another common lie used every day on this forum is: "Nobody cares about the heavyweight division any more!"

This lie, like all the other lies is easily proven as one.

Attendance numbers are not generally posted on a boxing card but a few are.

And the few that are clearly show that HW boxing is as popular, if not more so than at any time in its modern history.

Here are just a few examples.

1976, Muhammad Ali vs Ken Norton (3rd fight): 19,000 attended.

1978, Muhammad Ali vs Leon Spinks: 62,000 attended.

1997, Mike Tyson vs Evander Holyfield 2: 18,187 attended.

2009, Wladimir Klitschko vs Rusland Chagaev: 61,000 attended.

And with the Klitschkos commonly pulling in over 50,000 fans per fight.
Heavyweight boxing is bigger and more popular than ever.:hi:

Heavyweight title fights were once important around the entire world. The attendance numbers in Germany may be impressive but they don't prove that the division is strong globally. When Ali or Tyson fought, people from every continent in the world was interested. Now it's just a select few European countries who care.

Klitschko fights are sold internationally but what isn't commonly known is how much they charge. Some countries pay just over $1000 for the rights to show their fights, which shows how little interest there is. That's a tiny amount of money and it corresponds to the level of interest within that country.

The Klitschkos are great for boxing in Germany and eastern Europe. However, for the rest of the world, they push the sport further away from mainstream interest.

Dempsey had higher attendances nearly 100 years ago.

Tyson went to Japan & was mobbed, he went to Britian & was mobbed.

Ali fought all over the globe & attracted an enormous following.

Klychko's dont generate the same interest world-wide as previous champions, they dont bring excitement to the game & lack charisma.

Boxing is supposed to provide entertainment, the Klychko's have been succesful at winning titles but are dull & boring.

    Is this crap still going?
OP all your arguments to date have been gash and have been ripped to pieces.
How do you know the 90s fights wouldn't have similar attendances to the Klitschko fights had they been held in bigger venues?
No doubt you are cherry picking as well and that there were plenty of 90s fights that achieved similar numbers to Klitschko fights.

In summary: Klitchkos are good fighters and are popular in mainland Europe but are boring as **** to watch and will not be remembered fondly in comparison to Tyson/Lewis etc in most of the world.

still posting inconsequential stuff huh...... don't know about hw "lies" but there is some truth to the notion that in the US espcially hardly anyone cares about boxing now (its even less of a niche sport than before) and the hw division is no exception. it's great that the klits do so well in europe. If not for them and a few others, boxing would really be off the radar. just don't know what the point of these 'exposing lies' threads is

Ali was so popular only 2,434 fans showed up to watch him rematch Liston.

BTW, can you post approximate numbers of fans in an average "mob"?

Yea, this ain't true. Heavyweight is still the most popular division in boxing. (On average, of course) It makes the most money. Why does anyone still think crusierweights move up to heavyweights when they could dominate there? Somehow, someway, the heavyweight division remains the glory division in boxing.

You can make more by being a fringe contender/ journeyman than as the cruiserweight champ.

HW will always be the "glory" division in boxing, as the heavies go so goes boxing. Unfortunately, boxing is losing ground to MMA and Wrasslin' . . . its sad when fans would rather watch 2 men grope each other than watch the heavyweight champ fight.

As for the most popular division, not even close! With Pac and PBF at Welter 90% of the world is focused there. The SMW division has become hot recently due to the super 6 tourny.
