They can't really change the glove design much due to the wrestling/bjj techniques. The issue imo is that they are not penalizing the illegal fouls enough. How many times do you have to poke your opponents eyes before you get deducted a point ? The referees go through the rules with the fighters in the dressing rooms before the fights so really should you get 1, 2, or even 3 warnings after raking a guys eyes during the fight. If fighters were more regularly penalised for this with points off during the fight then they may change the way they fight. It's a dangerous foul that can badly affect the opponent for the remainder of the fight if they can fight on so dock points.
The Pride-style gloves look like a step in the right direction. Groin-strikes are penalized and intentional cup-bashing has been all but eliminated. The same should hold true for clawing a fighter’s eyes. Replay reviews would help with enforcement. “Control your weapons!”
