Think Brighton is referring to the second time Warren left Sky (in about 2011/12) to start BoxNation, rather than he left in about 2005 to go to ITV.

The card made eye watering losses to me too.

My tears of boredom flowed all night.

Maybe he was, but Calzaghe was long retired by then mate.

He always spoke as it was by choice as he couldn't do it on Sky and when he was explaining why they went to DAZN he mentioned controlling production as one of the reasons.

I said at the time I don't know why he was so keen on managing production as its just an extra cost and depending how far you want to push production quality it can be a very expensive one.

PBC remember did the same when they first started blowing an absolute fortune on production.

One thing that doesn't get mentioned much is advertisement and sponsorship revenue.

I would be surprised if the shows can demand the same rate as matchroom would on sky as there are less eyeballs watching on DAZN.

Exactly. Who gives a toss about fireworks and all that crap? Some of the best bouts I've seen have been at the York Hall and places like that. Saying that, a lot of people seem to elevate the status of a lot of Matchroom's bouts and I think a lot of it has to do with the incessant selling through advertising and interviews that Sky mediated.

I'd rather take a competitive bout any day over smoke and mirrors.

Hearn wants to float Matchroom and turn it into the UFC of boxing, and a sports 'platform' in its own right, across multiple sports. That means getting total control of the brand.

The latest True Geordie podcast is well worth a listen, this aspect is covered a lot. TG gets much better answers out of Hearn than any boxing commentators have recently.

I do think production values matter in the sense you are trying to sell the product as the best product so in turn the production values should represent that.

In MMA for example pride fc had the most amazing production which 15 years later you could still argue has not been matched. When pride lost its TV deal with fuji TV the production took a big dip in quality and fans took notice of that regardless of the actual fights as the production is what really set it apart from its competitors.

Matchroom big production and subpar bouts. Hardly ever a 50/50

well yeah, but there was no mention of Calzaghe in the original post so not sure what that has to do with anything. I was just clarifying that I’m pretty sure Brighton’s post quoted below was in relation to Warren leaving Sky in 2011 or 2012 of his own accord to start BoxNation, and nothing to do with the standard of Calzaghe’s opponents 7 or 8 years previously.
