http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Je9fncDgI-s he took some haymakers here off a guy who dropped and dominated Nino Valdez and #1 heavy Bob Baker ko in 1...look at the last hook
Mhm, his chin is underrated by some. He's the only man to ever go 15 rounds with Marciano as well, which is telling. And the KO loss against Walcott doesn't do much to diminish his toughness... It was a pin point shot, precision shot, the likes of which KO'ed the iron chinned Fullmer.
No man that can shake off Satterfield bombs like Ezzy did has anything less than a solid chin. Among the many examples of how good his punch resistance was.
Charles had a good chin he did go down to lesser fighters but his durability was excellent he was very hard to finish mostly due o his skill, heart and recovery similar to Louis in that way.
Marciano vs Charles 1 was a war! A very under rated brawl. You would figure Rocky would have stopped him because Charles stood toe to toe with him on exchanges, but that did not happen. Chins can be hard to explain. Charles was down 30 times in his career, Ko'd by one punch from Joe Walcott, and Ko'd by a middle weight. Yet on other occasions he took the best Archie Moore and Rocky Marciano had to offer. I think the best explanation is here might girt. Charles was a tough-minded fighter with some cajones. In boxing sometimes one part of the anatomy can help the other.
You could argue he was like a somewhat tougher Floyd Patterson. Dropped very often, but at the same time recovered extremely well. And both their chins have more complicated stories to them then you'd assume just reading how many times both had been down.
Patterson could be intimidated. Charles was not. My point is mental toughness adds to a fighters chin.
The vast majority of his KDs came very early in his career, when he was a scrawny middleweight being thrown to the wolves. Most of the rest came late in his career, when he was well past his prime and was beginning to suffer from Lou Gherig's disease. But from the time he came out of the army (at which point he had filled out into a true light-heavy) until after his two punishing battles with Marciano, he was very sturdy and hard to KO, with the lone exception being that left hook from Walcott, who was probably one of the hardest hitting cruiserweight-level fighters ever. He seems to have taken a punch better as he continually filled out in weight through his career, up until finally took too much punishment combined with the onset of failing health.

Did he accomplish this great feat primarily because of great defensive skills? I think not. You better have a good set of whiskers too! Charles 1946-1954 certainly had that.
For any Ezzard Charles fans like Minotauro or anybody else I found something you might like Post Interview 1954 after Charles knocked out Satterfield: "All I want is a title shot. I'll fight anybody to get it - Nino Valdez, Dan Bucceroni, Roland LaStarza. You name him, I'll fight him." -Ezzard Charles "Charles has earned the chance. It will not be necessary for him further to prove his right as the No. 1 contender." -Truman Gibson, IBC secretary, regarding Charles' shot at the title.
I don't know where the stories about a weak chin came from to start ... the man was a warrior, fought exceptional fighters, fought many much bigger men out of his natural weight class ... none of it makes sense ... the shot that Walcott ko'ed him with was every bit as nasty as the one Marciano flattened Walcott with ... it would have ko'ed 98% of any heavyweight ever ... Charles was an exceptional fighter with an A chin , not an A plus but an A ...
