What exactly did Ezzard have going for him? What truly seeperated him from other great fighters? At his absolute best, was he one of the greatest of all time? I mean, how could he not be? We're talking about someone who beat Charley Burley multiple times, including nearly KO'ing him in their first fight... And many of boxings most knowledgable consider Burley one of the greatest fighters of all time! His records riduclously misleading... At the end of his career he was fighting holding back after killing a man in the ring, and he was 35 pounds if not more over his best fighting weight. Even late into his career after all of that he was the sole man to ever go 15 rounds with Marciano, and came within a hairs breadth of stopping him with the split nose. Thoughts?
By my estimation: #1 LHW of all time #6 P4P fighter of all time. At his peak, was honestly similar to a larger Ray Robinson. Aside from his wins over the smaller Burley, he had even better wins(3 of them) over another top notch ATG in Archie Moore. One of the greatest, most underrated boxers in the sport's history, with one of the best resumes.
Easily greatest light heavyweight of all time. And from the film I see of him I say he was actually more well-rounded than Robinson.
He could do it all punch, box fight on the inside everything. He also has a whos who on his resumes a true great.
I think that one should only need to look at his early record (when he was fighting at 175 , his resume was outstanding in a golden era of LHWs . He emerged as the best of the era . I dont think the wins over Burley should carry as much weight as the 3 wins over Moore (even though Burley beat Moore). Burley's best weight realy was welter , a great LHW , should beat a great WW . But in his 3 wins over Archie, along with the other top LHWs of the day , he proved his greatness at the weight . He then went on to be a very good, if not great HW , yo cement his place as one of the best ever , in my opinion
1. Henry Armstrong 2. Harry Greb 3. Ray Robinson 4. Benny Leonard 5. Ezzard Charles 6. Willie Pep 7. Roberto Duran 8. Archie Moore 9. Joe Gans 10. Barney Ross
I think it's a no-show, about him being number one at LHW, he is number one, and nobody can touch him. Rudely, I will copy and paste something I said in another disucction. Charles beat Walcott twice, Archie Moore and Maxim three times each. He handed Joe Louis his first loss since Schmelling, and gave Marciano his two toughest fights of his career when he was on his way downhill, and that's just mentioning the all time greats he fought, let's not forget Burley, Lesnevich, Joe Baksi, Jimmy Bivins and Elmer RAy.
