Hi Buddy. Your post and points, are a valid contribution to the debate ( nothing new ) and good to see Pep mentioned. he is somewhat overlooked generally, when the P4P ratings are discussed, on the flip side, you didn't mention Langford ! for me he is worthy of a very high slot, defo in the top 3/4 no ? also no matter how great the fighters have been post Robinson, thinking Ali, RJJ, Paq, Mayweather, Canelo, Duran, Monzon, etc, the top 3/4 seems to remain a lock, and has for decades, interesting.... stay safe META5, your posts continue to inform and educate, long may they reign. Mike.
He's a fighter I don't know how or where to rank. I know that might sound ridiculous to some, but that's how I always view him. Obviously he beat some great fighters, but I thought his career was hard to rank for different reasons. At Lt. Heavy, he wasn't unbeatable and there were guys that beat him (Ken Overlin, Kid Tunero, Bivins, a KO loss to Marshall), however to be fair, that could have been due to inexperience as he was still young and learning. When he did hit his stride, he killed a fighter and some say he was not the same after that. I did not like him as a heavyweight, at all. I thought he was very lethargic. Some say this was the start of his illness which could be true. Had he stayed as a Lt. Heavy and became champion and stayed there a while, it would be easier to rank him. I never saw him as a "bigger version of Ray Robinson". There was only one Ray Robinson and he built up an incredible record and was almost flawless.
I thought when he fought Louis, that was the most on form footage I've seen of him so far, reminds me of Jose Stable destroying a past prime Charley Scott.
6 to 10 seems right to me. In other words, if he's left out completely, I would not have the person rating them over for Thanksgiving dinner. That kind doesn't come near my family.
Rather than numbered rating I like to just categorize guys. Because honestly most y'all's top 50s can be mixed up and I wouldn't argue. If you think Greb the p4p GOAT, fair If you think Mayweather is p4p GOAT, fair. So I'm not the sort to take issue with a guy ratings May on top and Greb at something like 30 or Greb on top and May around 30. I just call them GOAT candidate quality. For Ezzard, at LHW he's a GOAT candidate and at HW he's easily a top 20 ATG with a fine argument for top 10. So p4p he's got at least be a top 50.
Thanks Mike. You know, I knew I was forgetting someone, my brain was searching for someone and I was thinking Fitz but knew that I meant someone else - Langford, Fitz and arguably Barbados Joe - this is exactly what I think of when I think of p4p punching monsters.
He does have a stacked résumé but it is surpassed by Greb. He looks great on film, but it is surpassed IMO by SRR, Duran, Pep, SRL to name a few. I think he is absolutely a p4p giant and one of my fave fighters in terms of skill, but I could never accept him as thee greatest fighter when at least three superior fighters (résumé and skillset on film combined) exist.
