I can appreciate Layne's skills, sometimes subtle, sometimes not… However, in reading reports from the day, both from fights and training camps, the guy comes across as soft… not that he didn't have heart but that he wasn't very strong and was…errr… doughy and not much of an athlete. Ezzard did what was needed and displayed flashes of brilliance in doing yeoman's work on a Layne who sadly had probably already seen his best days at 23. What was the word on their second match? Dempsey's scoring as the ref looks suspicious at best… especially since Jack had at one point touted Layne as the next champ.
