Both were light-heavyweights who grew into heavyweights--but not big ones by today's standards. Patterson's chin was questionable as he got knocked down a lot, but he almost always got up and stopped his opposition. Johansson had him down 7 times, but never actually had him on the deck for a 10-count. Liston put him away twice, but he was the only one who did that. Patterson was also VERY fast. I'll go with Patterson either by a late-fight KO or a decision. I think the fight would be a lot like his two matches with Tommy "Hurricane" Jackson.

A very good match up. I personally like Charles to take a decision, but then again Floyd did pretty well against boxer types ie, Machen, Ellis, Quarry, and even Ali for a few rounds. The Ellis and Quarry fights were deemed by many as robberies which is why I listed them. Still I'll give Ezzard the edge.

Patterson was faster and had power in his punches. Charles was down to basic a better boxer. But he did´nt move like a lightheavy - he was kind of lazy -
I think Patterson would outpoint him.

One of the best match ups I've seen on here.as has been stated both were really light heavies and as I rate Mr Charles as the best 175lber of all time I'm going with him.
It'd have been a cra@king fight going the full 15 with Charles winning about 9 or 10 and scoring a couple of knockdowns and also maybe hitting the deck himself.
Both were considered first rate gentlemen and a credit to boxing.
Burt Bienstock would probably confirm this.

It would have been a good one. I slightly favor Patterson as he had faster hands and hit harder. Charles was a warrior type who often slugged when he was better off boxing.

Sort of an apples and oranges thing here.
Both are two of my all-time Favs!!
IMO Ezz is The greatest LH of all-time and one of the top 10 ATG's pfp.

But they were 10 years apart.

Floyd and Ezz were the same weight at different times in their careers.
    Floyd young, Ezz older.

I don't want to go here, two of my heroes, great human beings. Just don't even want to weigh in on this one.

Interesting one. I'd expect a peak heavyweight Charles (49-50) to be two steps too smart for Patterson and to ultimately outbox him over 15, but Floyd has a live punchers chance, I think. Patterson's left hand dominant style might match well against Charles if the Harold Johnson fight is anything to go by & that D'amato crouch and come up thing makes for an interesting mesh with Charles' preference to duck & slip outside onto he back foot, too.

Charles is my pick but there are interesting aspects to the fight.....it's a shame Patterson didn't stay at 175 for longer by the way, he'd be much more highly regarded if he did.

  14. Charles worked his way up to lt. heavy and heavy but Paterson like most heavies then was only in the 6 foot range anyway. In their primes and ASSUMING both are heavies in their prime...I see Charles knocking out Floyd in the same way Ingemar did when Ingenar got that punch in unexpectedly in their first fight. Floyd had one of the fastest left hands ever and good power but Charles fought the best, many in their prime, in the generation of fighters pre Floyd and is arguably top 10/15 or better all time heavyweight...ahead of Floyd. Charles by KO 6.
