I agree. But Charles faced and beat enough styles of tricky punchers for me to believe that he could cope. Jones was exceptionally quick but Charles would see openings and targets start to appear and work on throwing bombs in the same way Ray Robinson might have beaten Hearns. Charles was quite the puncher, as was Jones, but I would back Charles to come out on top if things started to get ugly in a brawl. More experienced in the face of adversity and arguably more durable.
Yes, maybe I was nitpicked into believing Charles deserves the edge because Burley tried different things and couldn't get it done. I pick Charles and it's not because Burley had problems caused against him.
Ol' Roy bein' sold short in this thread. Ez never fought anyone remotely close to the sped of Roy at LH. He might get the KO IF he can land sweet. But he's not going to win on points.
The argument that Charles never fought anyone like Roy is rather weak though. I mean, who did Roy ever fight that was remotely comparable to the all-around ability of Charles? At least Marshall and Burley have some things in common with Jones and are genuine, top level ATG's themselves. We have no idea how Jones is up against someone even near as good as a peak Ezzard Charles.
I was basing the point more on speed than just all round ability. And we know how Roy performed against a peak (if somewhat weight drained) James Toney.
