the difference in the amount of fight experience here is monumental ... does it get any more of a mismatch than here? Fouling your way to a victory against Kovalev is completing different than getting the **** kicked out of you by Charles .. one guy has 150 fights the other guy has 34 .. wtf do you think is going to happen
I understand the knee jerk reaction of absurdity by some but calmly looking at it, it is a good match up ... Andre Ward was a great fighter. No questions about it . Extremely smart, great defense, well conditioned , highly skilled and tricky as hell .. you have to favor Charles based on experience but I bet if they fought it would have been a competitive fight that went the distance ..
I can only see this going one way. Ward was an excellent all-rounder and could be innovative in there, but Charles is just another level altogether. Charles W UD (comfortably)
I think it's more than just experience that favors Charles in this one. Ward is certainly skilled, and by today's standards he is a "smart fighter" but by the standards of the 1940s, he'd be considered a study in sloth more than skill. His primary problem would be the same that Mayweather would have facing his betters in the past -he'd be forced to fight, constantly, and would be shoved out of his comfort zone. Pre-Sam Baroudi/1947 Charles would stop Ward. I have no doubt. Even post-Baroudi Charles -who was gun shy about hurting opponents- threw at least 50 punches in round 1 against Joe Louis -who outweighed him by 30 pounds plus. That nearly doubles Ward's output against Froch by a factor of 2. Is Ward more skilled than Charles? No. Does he hit harder? No. Is he faster? No. So what does he have on his side? What makes this even close? Ward would be in over his head.
Great post and dead on. I definitely think Charles wins but Andre Ward was no slouch and he absolutely would have his moments. Ward could compete in any era. With that said, I wouldn't bet against a prime Charles.
After a few rounds and Andre realizes what he's in there with I believe he'd settle into a going the distance mode kind of fight.
