Smokin Bert Cooper... a hard puncher who, like Bob Satterfield, would leave himself open to counter punchers, which is something Ezzard Charles excelled in. Both small men for heavyweights Ezzard being the more masterful boxer, however he had tendency to slug it out when boxing would win it So who wins? I think he frustrates Cooper and he quits on his stool in round 8 :bbb
Charles would know he was in a fight,...but he was far classier and superior to Cooper and he would have stopped Bert by the 10th round...putting Cooper down in the final round...and yes, he may very well had been decked by Cooper before that...maybe....Ezz could suck it up and take it, weirdly, despite all his career kd's, like in Marciano l.
Charles had the ring smarts to be a few steps ahead of a Bert Cooper all the way...I can see Smokin' hurting Charles along the way with his sneak right hand, but most of the time, Charles would be right there, but would probably put his head right on Cooper's shoulder, expertly take away Coop's weapons by putting his hands into the creases of Coop's elbows, and turning him into body and head shots all night to a TKO win. Charles, Pep, Moore, Johnson were all great at taking away an opponent's weapons inside...
Charles too crafty, smart and his precision like punches in the pocket would take Bert out early. Bert was no Satterfield and Ezz handled him well. Cooper quit in a few fights but I dont think Ezz needs his assistance in this one.
I favor Charles as well but not by early ko. I recently re watched Cooper/Holyfield and Burt came very close to pulling a rabbit out the proverbial hat only to lose by tko. Evander hit him with uppercuts that damn near decapitated him but couldn't put him down and Evander was a chiseled 210lbs with a good punch. Not so sure a 185lb Charles would ko him early. Outbox and outclass Cooper? Absolutely...maybe even stop him late in the fight but I don't see Ezzard putting Burts lights out early, at least not the 215lb Cooper that fought Holy and had a brutal battle with Mercer. That Cooper was dangerous and deceptively quick with his hands. Charles by comfortable decision or late round tko.
I'd pick Charles via UD, but a Cooper TKO win would not surprise me at all. On film Charles when faced with a puncher liked to brawl. ( Marciano, and Satterfield ). Although Charles beat Louis to the punch, he pretty much stood in front of him the entire fight, which is the only way he could have lost. If Charles takes the same approach vs. Cooper, especially early he could get knocked out. Charles wasn’t a stick and move type vs punchers, even if he could have been. More often than not he gave the fans their monies worth. I agree with Gentleman Jim on Cooper. If Cooper had better heart and stamina, he could have been better.
Up until the Layne fight that he won by stoppage,[1951 that's the first 11 years of his career,] Charles was considered a boring ,defensive, cautious performer.I don't know where you get this impression.
Mendoza the film of a prime ezzard Charles in 49 vs Valentino shows plenty of slick sticking and moving https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=98YPxkoonuY
Charles wins. He might have a scary moment or two if Bert shows up in good form as he did against Holy and moorer.
