1954-01-13 : Ezzard Charles 189 lbs beat Bob Satterfield 180 lbs by KO in round 2 of 10
"A revitalized Ezzard Charles, 189, dropped a bomb on Bob Satterfield, 180, in Chicago Stadium last night to touch off a gigantic buildup for a heavyweight title bout with champion Rocky Marciano. Charles, who gets the chance to become the first fighter in history to regain the heavyweight crown, pole-axed Satterfield in the first minute of the 2nd round with one of the hardest left hooks he ever has thrown. Satterfield was set up for the mighty finishing blow by absorbing a right to the midsection. As he started to bend forward, Charles' piston-like left caught him flush on the chin. He went over backwards and hit the canvas so hard resin dust flew. He lay lifelessly until referee Frank Gilmer tolled out the full count." -Associated Press

    Post fight comments:

    • "All I want is a title shot. I'll fight anybody to get it - Nino Valdez, Dan Bucceroni, Roland LaStarza. You name him, I'll fight him." -Ezzard Charles
    • "Charles has earned the chance. It will not be necessary for him further to prove his right as the No. 1 contender." -Truman Gibson, IBC secretary, regarding Charles's shot at the title.

Sattefield at 5"10 and 175-180lbs was a beast, He KO'd 31-1 6"3 Cleveland Big Cat Williams in 3, 6"2 1/2 Bob Baker in 1 and dominated 6"3 Nino Valdez in 1955 dropping Nino for a 9count in the 10th - he caught Charles a few times but Ezzard waited for that left hook- Ezzard had beautiful KO over Coley Wallace and Bob Satterfeild to get the Marciano fight- Ezzard looking good-Great fighter

Actually it just shows how poor some guys chins are. You bring up Cleveland Williams height like boxing has a height class. Williams weighed as low as 190 in his career. Here is Williams fight career. http://boxrec.com/en/boxer/9382 Williams is another one of those guys that casual fans love to talk about how good he was. Because in this case these older casual fans love think that every fighter from back in the day was a good fighter. Nino Valdez weighed as low as 175 in his career. Most of the fighters during that era would be considered club fighters by modern standards. So anyway Charles knocking out glass chin Satterfield proved nothing.

In 2003: The Ring Magazine's 100 Greatest Punchers
    included Bob Satterfield.
Satterfield was an entertaining fighter who tried his best, and many times
    went out on his shield.

1955-08-17 : Bob Satterfield 183 lbs beat Nino Valdes 215 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10
"Bob Satterfield, giving away half a head in height and 32 pounds in weight, outsped gigantic Nino Valdes of Cuba over 10 rounds last night to punch out a unanimous decision in the television battle from Chicago Stadium. Satterfield never backed up during the brawl. But his power punches which had carried him to 30 knockouts in 60 fights were unavailing until the last round. Then, after he had missed with one punch and fallen to the canvas, he got up and caught Valdes with a left hook to the jaw which sent him sprawling. Valdes grabbed the ropes and was on his feet at the count of five. At the eight count, referee Frank Sikora let the battle begin again and Valdes was staggering into combat, bleeding from the nose and lips. But he weathered Satterfield's attack to finish the bout." -United Press

    • Unofficial UP scorecard - 97-91 Satterfield
    Post fight comment

    • "It was a lousy fight. My guy had a bad night and he (Satterfield) had a good one. I want a rematch. If he can't lick Satterfield, I'll retire him." -Bobby Gleason, Valdes' manager, explaining the loss.

He KO'd and dropped some of the bigger men of the era and outweighed by 20-30 lbs and gave up 4-5 inches in height, Ezzard took Bobs punches well and stopped him impressively - Ezzard was a great gifted fighter

Satterfield sold out on every punch, a precursor to Shavers. It takes real wrecklessness (or balls) to fight like that and sure is crowd pleasing. Charles by chilling KO here, tho. Stopping your opponent is a lot more about timing than swinging for the fences.
