Ezzard Charles circa 1950 vs the best version of Cleveland Williams. Charles has the clear advantage in skill and boxing ability but Williams in size and power. If Williams came along 10 years earlier and was in his prime in 1950 and was a title defense, would Williams walk out the ring as champion or would he be a statistic on Charles resume?

Charles wins but Williams isn’t a pushover unless you’re a quality fighter, which Charles was

Charles was a great boxer, but I don't think he would ever beat Williams for a few reasons:
    1) He was tough, but not tough enough to take Williams' bombs.
    2) He never faced anyone near as gigantic as Williams, w/ the exception of two fighters I can think of.
    3) The two really big fighters he fought were Holman and Valdes, who he lost to. I do realize that he was not prime anymore,
However, I still think in his prime as a heavy, plus his less-than-amazing chin, that he would get bombed out by Williams, but I am guessing a later victory for Williams, about 7-9.

In Marciano/Charles 1, he went the distance with Rocky by being able to smother his punches and being able to block. I don't think he'd be that easy to land on.

True, but Cleve could rough him up like hell in clinches. Also, remember, Marciano is known for being incredibly inaccurate, missing half his HAYMAKERS against a wounded Moore on the ropes. Cleve was not super accurate either, but was a helluva lot more accurate than Marciano, and would also be able to compete w/ Charles on a boxing level as well, not just punching.

Don't want to resort to triangle theory but Charles beat Moore who beat big heavies like Valdez. It's possible prime Charles beats Valdez as well and I think Charles was clearly the better boxer.

I think you're right about the Valdes fight, and maybe Holman too, but Williams was a more advanced fighter than they, and that's why I think he would beat Charles.

He beat Satterfield who beat Williams. :sisi1

    Casual logic is always right.

He also lost to Harold Johnson, who lost 4x against Moore, therefore Moore beat Charles, right? Not always good logic 2 use.

My point was is that prime Charles could perhaps handle the bigger guys.

My point is that I think Charles could handle those bigger guys, and maybe several others, but that certain big guys he just wouldn't have a chance against.

Yeah but remember he beat Elmer Ray, who was bigger than Charles, not as big as Williams, but had a great punch. Ray had very similar opposition as Williams did. I wouldn't necessarily put Williams over Ray. In fact, Elmer Ray vs Cleveland Williams would promise to be a rock 'em sock 'em affair which could go to whomever landed the big one first.

To be honest, I think Charles would do better against Liston than even many bigger guys. Not saying he'd win, but he's one of the few from the smaller generations of heavies I'd pick to get the job done.
