Ezzard Charles vs David Tua

Tua launches Charles head into orbit.

Byrd was slicker, could fight in an extremely negative manner if need be. I am not going to give Charles the advantage because he never fought "genuine" HWs

I'd say Byrd was more elusive than Charles and less willing to engage.You disagree?

 

On one hand, Charles was more agressive than Byrd. On the other, he's simply better and more complete boxer.

I don't get why people say Charles was chinny. Maybe if you take the old version that faced Marciano, but peak Charles was extremely tough to stop. Tua is way too basic for him and he would have reach/height disadvantages.

 

I would. Byrd's head-movement was more eye-catching than Charles' but I'm fairly certain if Byrd was facing fighters his own size like Charles was, then his head-movement wouldn't look quite so good. Especially against the likes of Walcott and Marciano. Plus, Byrd also used his legs less than Charles and wasn't nearly as good at controlling pace and range. Moreover, Charles was never really at a detriment to a left hook. He had problems with great jabs more than hooks.

 

Aye, Charles was far from chinny. And as much as people on here won't like it; Marciano was more destructive than Tua ever was. Charles also, while having an offense several magnitudes greater than Byrd's, had way better footwork and movement should he need it.

 

It's such an underrated point. People don't realize that it's harder to look skilled against faster, more skilled competition. Of course overcoming size disadvantage is also tough, but it's so much easier to look fast and elusive against slow 230+lbs behemots than against elite LHWs and small HWs.

 

The Charles of the mid to late 1940’s would have my vote to win a decision.

 

Marciano got to Charles, I expect Tua would too at some point

 

Walcotts left happened to be thrown by someone who had a boxing brain. Tua is nothing compared to either.

 

When he lost to Ike or when he was outboxed by a much worse boxer then Charles in Byrd Or you can go with Lennox Tua he was a lot bigger and a few years more modern.

 

Tua and Marciano are not a 1-1.... David is 1/3 the fighter Rocky was.

 

Seems people don’t realise just how much more skilled Ezzard is then David. David is a relative novice and would be exposed as such for 15 slow rounds.

 

I'm leaning toward a Charles decision at his best. Tua usually has that punchers chance but he'd have to get a little lucky IMO. I personally wouldn't consider Charles chinny as such.

 

And if Walcott was fighting true HWs like Byrd did he would be getting knocked out. His head movement would not have saved him.
