Ezzard Charles vs David Tua

Charles knew every inch of the ring. A true master boxer. I think he could keep David off balance more often than not. Maybe 1 out of 10 David gets lucky.

 

Marshall knocked Charles down with a left hook to the liver. Walcott sparked him with a left hook.

 

I wouldn't call Walcott KO punch a left hook, it was more like quasi-uppercut.

Tua was nothing like Walcott as a puncher, he was much more skillful counter puncher.

 

Tua couldn't throw a shot like Walcott if his life depended on it.

 

Because I am trying to establish that Charles could be knocked down with punches thrown by the left hand, and you pedantically nit picking between a left hook and a left hook /cum uppercut is irrelevant muddying of the waters , I don't say Tua would manage it but it is a possibility imo.
Walcott was a more skillful counter puncher,he was also more leisurely in his approach, Tua ,for all his limitations would be in Charles face and on his chest from the word go.Tua also had a decent right hand as Moorer found out ,the idea that he only had a left hook is a complete fallacy.
IMO If there is a ko in this fight Tua will be delivering it.He took harder punches than Charles was ever capable of landing, which to me means he will not be too concerned about return fire .This means Charles has to dodge his power for the whole of the fight and win by decision as Oquendo attempted to do.Maybe he would ,and then again maybe he wouldn't .Charles stated Marshall hit him harder than anyone,I don't think Marshall could bang like Tua.Therefore I must give Tua a punchers chance.

 

He stopped 43 opponents in 54 fights,so he seemed to be able to deliver his power most of the time! Another factor imo is he punched harder than Walcott and had a better chin, therefore he would be less concerned with incoming fire and not needing to land so many wallops to slow up Charles legs . Added to this is the increased weight disparity, what was there between Charles and Walcott when Joe ko'd Ezz 12lbs. 194lbs to 182lbs.Tua in shape was 220lbs. that's another 20lbs of muscle in his shots and bulling you around the ring. Dismissing Tua here is simplistic folly imo.

 

Who would you pick to win a 3 fight series?

 

Probably Charles,and I'd pick him to win a single bout ,my point is dismissing Tua out of hand is rather silly imo.

 

I'm with you on that especially in the heavyweight division.

 

Byrd was tough to catch, Charles wasn't do to style and defense.

Tua quite easily the weight difference would be too much. If Charles naturally weighed around 210-15 he would win with ease
