Is Charles too little or can he out box these bigger men? And how do these fights end? I have to say that I favor Charles in these matchups, even though he was 184-185 at his HW best.
Charles can take Shavers' power. Don't forget he went 15 rds with Marciano who is a much tougher fighter/puncher to fight.
Lyle has a decent chance to outbox Charles. 60/40 fight Charles maybe 70/30. Charles was much more skilled though.
Ezzard was a ATG at 175 lbs and was a cerebral fighter and a masterful boxer. Rocky Marciano said '' He was the bravest fighter he ever faced ." Shavers always had a punchers chance but Charles too agile. Charles on pts. Lyle had difficulties with boxer's losing to Ali and Young twice. Despite the weight disadvantage Charles in a fight which would have its moments Charles outboxes Lyle via unaminous dec.
Frankly I don't see why not. It's already been demonstrated historically that ~185 pound fighters can, in at least some instances, compete just fine with fighters well over 200 pounds. A while ago I created a thread in which I basically asked for any good evidence that the cruiserweight division needed to be created at all, and I did't receive any answers I found even slightly convincing.
Charles can outbox both of these guys. But Charles was "one punched out" by Walcott in their 3rd fight. So Shavers definitely could put him out, and Lyle could probably TKO him. Going with "Charles fights smart" and gets 2 UD's.
In effect Charles at his best could out point both these men. He had the skills and heart. He would have to be careful though especially from shavers, getting caught against was Walcott put him down, getting caught by shavers would put him out cold. But I'll go with Charles by decision in tough fights.
