this is an excelent matchup. On resume I rate patterson at #15 and charles #16 as my all time heavyweight list -they are that close. If that sounds low I think 11-20 on my list are prety interchangable so they are amoung my b-listgroup. in showbiz terms Patterson was a child star of boxing, he posibly came to the title a little too early and posibly could have been amoung the best light heavyweights ever but cus took his chance when rocky retired and the rest is history. as an ex heavyweight champ when he was much more seasoned floyd had some great wins. chuvalo, bonnavena, machen plus a draw with a peak quary and posibly beat a peak ellis. charles was just a superb fighter. he beat more champions and top contenders. from the war until he fought marciano all of his losses were disputed apart from one KO loss to wallcot -who he oficialy beat 2 times. his best wins were walcott, louis, elmer ray, baksi, oma, layne, satterfeild as well as the best lightheavyweights. its very close. posibly even. I can make a great case for both. maybe i edge toward charles.
Great match up. Patterson has the better speed and power, but Charles is a bit more durable. 50/50 type of match. By the way, I think Patterson's performance vs Ali is under rated.
The first Ali vs Patterson match was a good losing effort by Patterson. I have not seen it in a while, but I think Patterson took a few rounds. In the re-match, Patterson had back issues.
I thought patterson had bad luck in both fights. He did beter in their last fight. ali gave away rounds then floyd got his eye hurt when ali opened up. It was frustrating because floyd was fighting back when ali started to get into it. Its a while since I last viewd it but i thought the first one (vegas) was the one where floyd put his back out? It was a bit disapointing because at that time with his speed he should have been able to give ali a real test but floyd was so hampered with the back, he bravely stayed in it but it was a doomed task.
Great Match up.. I would favor Charles here, just by a hair. I see a tough fight all the way through with Patterson bringing the fight to Ezzard all night. I see Ezzard countering well and out slicking Patterson over the distance. Floyd will leap in with the big hook all night but Charles will take it and make him pay with quick and accurate counters.. I just think Ezzard is a touch slicker and more of a polished pro then Patterson..
Though I think Floyd was a fine fighter and underrated, I like Charles who was more of a solid better all around fighter, I think Ezzard stops a young Floyd or wins a UD
Maybe so, but Patterson did in fact have back issues. It just goes to show Ali was not shutting out guys much smaller than him who could fight.
The Back fight was fight #1. However, I think he just had back issues throughout. Once a bad back, always a bad back. If you don't have your back, you are not going to be affective, specifically with that style. It seems Tyson had back issues even early on as an amateur. Of course there are other injuries either can have away from boxing that may affect the back, however; I've always thought that style, that training, would wear down the back. That wasn't a prime Patterson either.
At Light Heavy I think Patterson was about as good as anyone I've seen. It's tough to gauge just how this matchup would go, though. I prefer Patterson of the two, but I can't favor him on that basis. A 50/50 type fight.
Which performance? I haven't seen the first fight in awhile but he didn't do too bad in the rematch. It's a toss up on who would win Patterson/Charles I'm a huge, huge fan of both.
