True, unless they're actually looking at Ali's fundamental points,I'll allow them to, that's if they also got the athleticism...
Muhammad Ali was a lot like Manuel Medina, he got good at doing the wrong things, you can fight pretty much any way you want with a level of situational awareness. For an aggressive example take Koichi Wajima, like Ali he seemed to go his own way and fight how he wanted in an “unschooled” sort of way, as did Benitez… troubling outcomes at times, in the case of Benitez he was hard to hit but rarely was he in position to punch back and when he was caught he was caught HARD.
Benitez and Ali had actual good fundamentals covered with their athleticism and unorthodox styles though, Wajima was really awkward but he could time his shots good, never watched Medina.
I disagree that Ali and Benitez had good fundamentals, however it could be a misunderstanding on the term… what do you mean by fundamentals chap? Checkout Manuel Medina vs Troy Dorsey.
That's the best source I could provide for both fundamentals though, not like what the coaches told you to do,but they advanced it with their own spin.
I’m not being rude, I hope, but fundamentals are everything in boxing you don’t “advance them” think of them as notes for all the infinite songs available to an instrument - The best musician is just the most capable of playing out the best songs… everyone SHOULD have access to the same piano keys … those guys succeed very much despite a lot but the mind can make it work, situational awareness is important doing the wrong things at the right time and in boxing their is a lot of wriggle room… you understand my meaning I hope? Watch Frazier do you see how he has all his weight on the front foot and keeps it there? It castrates the right hand, it makes it impossible to weave off of because you aren’t shifting the weight from lead to rear foot, makes your hook an “at” not through punch… his head was too close to the opponent because of where he kept his weight, he bent at the waist - did any of that hinder him? In some ways, the path was bumpy but a few bad notes didn’t stop him because he’s Joe Frazier.
But honestly...the wrong things they did were mixed by the fundamentals itself, it's still a move that's roots leads to boxing fundamentals. And imo, fighters do take fundamentals with different approaches, some take an unorthodox takes like Ali,mixing the fundamentals he had with his own techniques and spin.
Ali WOULD have been an excellent fighter? So just being the greatest heavyweight in history is not enough for you?
