On a level playing field, Charles wins. There can't be any question about it. If it's held in the same day weigh-in era, then it's at 175 where Charles tortures him, and if it's in the twenty four hour weigh-in era, then it's at 160, but they're both weighing 175, and Charles tortures him again. But where it gets interesting is if you ignore the weigh in issue, and pit the pre-military Charles vs the 2014 GGG.

That way, Charles is handicapped with having to cut the six/seven pounds he didn't like to in order to get to 160, and GGG would have a weight advantage without being drained.

Charles, at middleweight, often had trouble with high workrates and aggressive-types. His losses to Turnero and Overlin are direct products of a primed man who didn't struggle with the weight overturning him and out-hustling him down the stretch. Charles also showed a couple chin deficiencies at 160 (more concerning than he did at 175, and he didn't prove he could take shots from the best like he did at 175/HW). GGG can potentially combine the three aspects which gave Charles issues, of strength, power and workrate. But that being said, Charles was so much more skilled, much more talented, and beat much better fighters at the weight (and obviously in general), that's it very hard to pick against him.

GGG's jab isn't gonna be a massive factor, given that Charles' jab is better, quicker and longer, and Charles counter-punching skills are more than enough to take GGG's jab away. GGG's body work would be what worries me, but I don't think he actually gets off enough. Charles was more than capable of staying out of range when he needs to, but he liked to take someone apart from the pocket, and his own body punching would likely have a similar affect to Canelo's; making GGG completely abandon his. GGG's power could score him a win, but if Archie Moore, Jimmy Bivins and Rocky Marciano couldn't....

No, Charles likely out-points him cleanly and has little to worry about, even with the handicapped. If it's an even fight, then GGG has nothing for him, and his iron chin only serves in turning a clinic, ending with a KO, into a career-shortening beating. I hope you all agree and join me in pitying GGG, but still knowing that he loses no matter how many hurdles you make Ezz jump through.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Clear win for Charles. The only question is whether he wears white trunks or black

Charles even has a better Middleweight resume than Golovkin, and quite clearly at that. I'd favour him in any time period or ruleset.

If at least two of the judges are BCS8, CST80, or mirkofilipovic, then Golovkin sweeps a wide decision.

 Golovkin clearly has people perturbed :D Why people have to hate an ATG when they get to see them in their own lifetime, is beyond me.

I may as well dip my toes in.

    At MW I'll take Golovkin.

At higher weights I'll take Charles. I think he did most of his best work at higher weights.

As for the Golovkin KO vote beign laughable, let's not forget what a guy with a 36% KO record did to Charles:

    https://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Ezzard_Charles_vs._Lloyd_Marshall_(1st_meeting)

I wouldn't pick Golovkin by KO myself, not even at 160, but that goes to show nothing is impossible, only improbable.

It's extremely well known that Charles had a bad back injury in that one. In the rematches the only spot of success Marshall had (a fighter infinitely more accomplished than GGG) was a slip. Charles obliterated him twice in return.
While this is true, Charles' work at middleweight was still leagues above GGG's.

    Hip, if I recall.

Golovkin was ill for a couple of his fights too. It happens.
