I'm going with Charles by KO. By all accounts, Greb wasn't a big puncher, so I don't think he can hurt Charles.
Charles, by Ezzards time, boxing became more athletic and stylish... so where you always had Tough, Rugged Fighters, now Athleticism was equally part of the arsenal by the 30s/40s. an Overall Better Era/Boxers, generally speaking
He hurt Gene Tunney (fighter with better chin than Charles) and gave him a beating. I wouldn't underestimate his power, even if he wasn't power puncher by design. Besides, Greb fought 300 fights and got stopped only twice - once because of freak injury and another one in his 7th fight. Expecting any LHW or MW to stop Greb isn't a good idea.
This is one helluv a fight. Tunney was not fully filled out, but Greb beat him badly. Word is that Greb did not want any more of Tunney as he was getting to big. Greb would make EZ uncomfortable, but I think the Charles that fought Marciano would edge a points victory and just by a hair - get a handle on Greb as the fight progressed. Tunney during his Heavyweight best would probably stop Greb, but I think Charles eeks out decision. Close match - Lb for Lb Greb is better, but a great big man beats a great smaller man. Fun fight.
The foolishness in this thread, Ezzard couldnt get past Ken overlin who was said to be a poor mans greb , he has no chance against the real deal in Greb!
Going Greb here because from what I’ve heard about his style of fighting I think he’d give Charles a lot of issues
How can anyone pick anyone in this fight? If no one saw Greb fight it’s kind of hard to gauge him. I’d say Charles beat better opposition but Greb was slightly more dominant in his time an era of very bad boxing though
We can pick Charles cause we can see him on film, and usually the boxers of his era looked a lot better than those in Greb's. Boxing evolved. Plus Charles was the bigger man.
Sure man, whatever floats your bubble. All you old time lovers are crazy and can't grasp reality, you live in dreamland. Greb would get beaten to a pulp by any decent amateur nowadays. All your old timers would. Sure, some are ATGs given their achievements, but that doesn't translate into H2H ability.
Yeah, what a bad era for boxing. Gene Tunney, Mike Gibbons, Tommy Gibbons, Tommy Loughran, Mickey Walker, Tiger Flowers, Kid Norfolk and many, many others...
I don't see any difference in class between Bivins/Marshall and Loughran/Tunney. If anything, the latter two look better.
