But you are wrong, I can see Tommy Gibbons competing for LHW title in 1940s just as he was, without any adjustment. Same with Tunney and others. Seriously, what makes you believe that Gibbons wouldn't be able to compete with Charles competition? He looks much better on tape than someone like Maxim for example.
I respectfully disagree...I’ve only seen gibbons in two fights and both are partial footage. So haven’t seen a ton and the Tunney fight was his last fight so won’t count that but he doesn’t look all that great against Dempsey. More modern then his contemporaries for sure. But how often can one turn their back to their opponent? He didn’t throw a lot of rights that fight either. It’s not my contention that these men “couldn’t compete” like some say but they would have to change their mechanics. Maxim to me looks really good on film. Just boring as hell. He’s a LHW John Ruiz lol. And Dempsey had all the tools to be great in any era. But he would learn new tricks too and change his technique slightly. Men like Gibbons and Tunney changed the boxing scene. They should be given their due. I just don’t think they’re as refined as later on. Come the late thirties boxing really isn’t much different then today. Just my opinion from what I see on film and I’m open to have it changed.
This is past prime Gibbons, this Gibbons looks far better than Maxim to me. He showed excellent right hand here: This content is protected Turning back to opponent isn't always a bad thing, it can help you to go away from charning fighter.
