We are talking both men at their best. Charles on his best night was an all time great fighter. A sharpshooter with a Ko punch in either fist. Rahman on the other hand was a bum. Charles stops him easily.
I agree. Very thoughtful post. Ezzard likely wins, but those saying he'd coast or play around may be too taken with the fantasy in this fantasy fight.
We are talking about the 1948 Ezzard charles. Not the 1953 version. Valdes wouldn't have touched Charles in 48. valdes got knocked out in 1 round by the joe Louis whom Charles won a wide decision over.
rahman 235 lbs, with an 82 inch reach.one of the strongest heavyweights ever.knocked out the iron chinned lennox lewis with one punch. charles is a lightheavyweight.
Where in the original post is a date specified? Ok I'll indulge you In 1948 Charles, weighing 173.75lbs was on the verge of being kod by Archie Moore. Charles won the first two rounds, lost the next two, and then won the next three. They set a terrific pace.... Midway in the eighth round, Moore caught Charles with a terrific left hook and followed his advantage.... Charles was definitely on the verge of a kayo... but, to the surprise of everyone, he snapped out of his dazed condition, landed a volley of left hooks and then a perfect right cross." (The Ring, April 1948, page 51). That Charles would be giving up 67/68lbs to the Rahman who kod Lewis. Rahman has a very good chance of taking him out clean!
Moore was a very quick fighter and an ATG. Rahman is as slow as a rust gate and could not fight a lick. He would never find Charles.
Moore was an ATG but not at heavyweight. Five months after the Charles fight Moore was kod in 1 round by 11-2-1 172lbs Leonard Morrow. I'm not convinced that Charles can concede nearly 70 pounds to Rahman.
Rahman could not fight. It would be a different story if he had skill or even was quick. It always appeared to me that Rahman was muscle bound. He would not find Charles.
Rahman was no ATG but to say he could not fight is rather silly. His record is 62 fights 50 wins with 41 kos. He beat the likes of Lewis,Tua and Sanders. Sanders was pretty quick and Rahman found him. I'm not saying Rahman wins, I saying that with nearly 70lbs advantage he only needs to connect with his right hand a few times and Charles, whose chin was never that terrific, is gone.
He survived 15 rounds with Marciano, a combined 19 rounds with Elmer Ray. 15 rounds with Joe Louis.. A whole bunch of rounds with Walcott.. In his seven stoppage virtually none of them were during prime.. Had to be something more to that chin than we might suspect.
Mythical match ups are always with both men at their best. At his best Charles beats Rahman. Super skilled ATG vs a nobody who already is forgotten in time.
I never said his chin was china I said it wasn't terrific. Up to1955 a few months after he fought Marciano, Charles had been on the floor 20 times, so I think I've been fair here. ps. Apart from Savold who of any note did Ray ko? N B Ray was 37 years old when he lost to Charles.
That nobody has 9 losses: Holyfield.[ freak injury] Wlad Lewis Tua Maskaev x2 Ruiz Povetkin Nansen The last two occurred when he was in his 40's That is not a nobodies record.
