A very hard stylistic match-up for Charles...Could he keep Frazier off him? Charles had good movement when he wanted to....in this fight he would have to. 15 rounds at heavy. Who and why?
If he can last 15 with a peak Marciano, he can go 15 with Frazier. Not every time... But it's possible. Beating Joe... Ehhh. Not sure.
If we are talking Charles of the Louis fight he might outpoint Frazier. But early 50's Charles was beginning to slip. Joe's fighting weight was 12-15 lbs more than the Rock and dealing with the weight might slow Charles enough so Joe catches him late.
Frazier was bigger than Marciano, had better hand speed, and was probably quicker on his feet. Marciano had a better chin than Joe, and better one punch power; though these advantages would not make him perform better against Charles than Frazier. The difference in size would be too much for Charles when you add in the fact that Frazier is faster than Rocky, and has as much wind in his sails. Frazier's swarming style, and heavier blows, would score more than Charles' cleaner shots. Frazier, wider margin of victory UD over Charles than that of Marciano's. Look, before I start some kind of riot, I rank Marciano a couple spots higher than Joe all time. I think that Joe's activity would just be more overwhelming against Charles.
Prime Charles?I'll take a Prime Charles to out point a prime Frazier.A past it Charles went 15rds with Marciano and they battered one another,I consider Marciano a several of notches above Frazier.Charles UD 15.
With both at their best I'd expect it to go the full distance. The decision could go either way. It's too close to call, for me anyway.
Prime Charles had his hands full with some not so special light heavies and heavies not named Marciano or Charles. Frazier was well equiped to defeat the speedy boxer types. He'd take Chalres out.
I think the Frazier of Ali 1 could pull of a hard fought 15 round UD or SD but the Frazier of Ali 2 or # or the Foreman fight would lose a UD or late TKO to Ezzard
Joe wins this, no doubt about it in my mind. I wouldn`t be surprised to see him stop Charles before the 10th either, as the best version of Joe Frazier wasn`t a slow starter contrary to popular belief but rather came storming out of the gates once the first bell rang, hence the nickname "Smokin" Joe Frazier. I`ll take the Frazier of the second Bonavena fight and the first Ali fight to stop Ezzard sometime between rounds five and ten. Charles was a great fighter and he did hold his own against some good big men and beat some of them, but Joe Frazier was another kind of animal altogether to what Ezz was used to facing at the higher weights. Frazier KO9 Charles
I don't think Joe took out Machen, but I agree that a Charles-Frazier fight would go something along the lines of the Ellis-Frazier fight. I think Charles would last a little longer than Ellis did, maybe going 8 rounds before Frazier finishes him.
I think frazier wins by late round stoppage or unanimous decision in a competitive fight. Fraziers excelled at this kind of style. I think frazier matches up better vs the speedy boxer types than marciano, but marciano matches up much better against punchers than frazier does.
