Charles wins a decision with a few bumpy roads along the way

 

I like Ezzard Charles by a comfortable decision. Baer was powerful and durable which are factors in any fight but Charles is a few levels above in skill and talent

 

Charles had a good chin in his prime before his decline though. He survived the power of men like Elmer Ray, Archie Moore, Joe Walcott and Rocky Marciano. I won’t count Joe Louis because I think much of his punching ability had diminished by that point

 

That’s true - but if we’re going with the best Charles (not the one Marciano fought), he’s a good deal superior to Schmeling.

 

Agreed. Someone started a thread a while ago matching Schmeling vs Charles head to head. I favored Ezzard.

 

I like Charles by decision but max had the punch to end it if he got lucky.

This is a U-turn, I seen this thread made a few years ago, a lot were picking Baer, the poll suggests a large change in opinion.
Charles has the much better fundamentals, boxing IQ, speed, balance and footwork, he outboxes him to a clear decision, Braddock beat him using those things, so could Charles who did virtually everything better than Braddock.

 

Charles in a relatively easy decision, complicated only by the fact that he takes his foot off the gas and lets Max win the last couple of rounds, giving referee Jack Dempsey a chance to screw him.

 

The best of Charles couldn't floor a wildly out of shape 36 year old Louis. Schmeling outboxed and beat down the 22 year old destroyer version of the same guy.
Charles is better at p4p ranking, but H2H Schmeling is the better fighter.

 

Charles got that jab stuck in his face round after round after round against a vastly inferior Louis and people think he was better to Schemling at heavyweight... Crazy talk.
