Ezzard Charles vs Sonny Liston

Liston by 12 round stoppage. But it's not one sided at all and gives liston one of the hardest fights of his career.

It was young Liston but it was also old Charles!At that time his thing started to show!He was past prime and old!
But still he beat Liston in sparing!

 

Liston fought for less than a year as an amateur and had 3 pro fights when they sparred. Ezzard at that point was a top 3 heavyweight.

Ezzard held Lhw crown but he was top 5 but top 3?
Ezzard used Liston as sparing partner in 1955 and 1956!At that time Charles was 35 and he was finished and washed and his health problem appeared!
Yes at that time Liston was novice but old Charles backed him!Young Charles from late 40s would kill him!Charles was not amazed by his power and he fought 121 fights and said Liston is not the strongest guy!Charles always mentioned Marciano,Louis and Walcott power but he said Marciano hit hardest!

Using a sparring session between an experienced contender, and a fighter who's had 3 fights as an account of what would happen in a prime for prime scenario is a level of intellectual dishonesty that would put even Choklab to shame.

When Ezzard was *sparring Liston Charles was a top 3 rated current heavyweight. At the time they were sparring Ezzard was considered one of the 3 best heavyweights in the world. I can't say it any simpler than this.

By the same token Liston had just a few pro fights and also very little amateur action prior to that. Taking anything serious away from the sessions would be quite frankly ridiculous.

They sparred in 54, not 55 or 56!!! It's right there in your article for heavens sake.

why would Ezzard not back him up? Why would he be amazed by his power? Why would he be amazed by anything Listonat that point?

Liston was grown man!At that age Foreman was beaten by Quarry but he gave Liston tough sparing!I never heard that someone beat Ali or Marciano in sparing even when they were young!Liston was sparing partner not only for 1954 but to 1956!They spared several times!And Charles was washed LHW!He was not best at that time!I never heard that someone schooled Charles in sparing either!Sonny is way overrated!Lhw alos beat him few times!Ray Patterson not even close to Charles level knocked Liston cold when he heard what Liston did to his brother Floyd!

With all due respect, George Foreman and Jerry Quarry have never fought. Would have been a good fight though.

 

They never fought but in sparing Jerry beat Foreman and leave impression on young George!

 

He's one of the most underrated HW champs ever IMO
