Wich year was that? Looks like the early '90s.

edit: never mind... it was '91 (youtube link) and featured in the vid.

    Dustaine, you're a Cuban right?!

Have you seen the 91 Amateur World Championships? And if so, did you think Savón deserved the win in the final?

Yes, I'm Cuban, and I've been following and watching boxing since 1980 or something.

I never missed those championships, so I'm sure I watched that fight. That was when he fought Tua, right? But I can't remember whom he fought in the final.

Right, he fought Tua in the semi's and Vanderleyde in the final. The verdict in the final was highly disputed (certainly by the public).
Some say he won it rightfully because of the amateur scoring system, others say he just should have lost. The Dutch coverage was of course very biased and incomplete (only showed clips) so I never knew if it was legit.

Savón made his point in the '92 Olympic semi's that he was the far better boxer, but that doesn't count for the '91 result of course.

Today I´ve read something about olympic history in boxing. Damn, Cuba seemed to be a boxing country back in the 70s to 90s. I wonder how guys like Felix Savon and Teofilo Stevenson would have fared in the pros. Why did so many cuban amateur stars avoid the pros?

Yes, I remember Vanderlyde from Barcelona '92. But I can't remember their fight in 91. I'll try to find something in Youtube.

I tried to find it a while ago, but couldn't find it. Hope you have some more luck, cause I really like to see it in full, and not some clip show with only one guys actions in a row to make it look like a onesided beating.

That video made me realize how long Shannon Briggs has been taking clean head shots from the best heavyweights in the world. Almost 30 years now?

Yep, if you see this bout it's hard to believe he had such trouble with him in the World Championships.
But the fact the commentators didn't knew who he was is very odd, because of his (until then) 2 Olympic Bronze medals, 2 World silver medals and 3 European gold medals... It was not like he was an unkwnown boxer or anything :huh
And the way they spoke about Savón himself is even more sad... Like he was just a poor mans Stevenson.

By age 24 Savon had won three world championships and two pan am games.. and if it wasnt for cubas boycott of the 84 and 88 games he would had two olympic gold medals as well.. that puts to rest the myth that he was beating young guys.. he had the talent to beat tyson in his prime or at least compete with all of them.. including bowe, holyfield and the rest
