RM: With that said, I’m sure you’re aware that this is the second fight of a two-bout extension Team Donaire signed with Top Rank. If Donaire chose not to re-sign with Bob Arum and became a free agent and provided Abner gets by Agbeko, what do you think the chances are of Mares-Donaire being made?

FE: I think it would be a great fight for us. Abner is at a point in his career where he wants to prove he’s the best. Last year was his coming-out year. A lot of people thought he beat Yonnhy. I had him winning. Then with the Darchinyan fight, a lot of people didn’t give him a lot of hope. And yet, he showed a lot of courage through adversity by coming back from being knocked down and being hurt.

If the Donaire fight were to happen, I’d be open to it. Golden Boy promotes Abner and they would also have to have a say in it. You know the situation how it stands with Top Rank and Golden Boy, though, so they would have to work it out.

 

It was more of a statement that he wants it and would like to propose it.
