Why not? He would have beat the Lineal and former lineal champs in the division! Not bad if you ask me. Two different fighters altogether and a true test of his ability.
Some people will never respect him. That's just the nature of some fans. Those fans don't count, so there's no reason to pay them any attention. But Floyd should push to make the above mentioned fights happen. That way he can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that he's the best welterweight in the world. I think it's pretty much a given among educated fans that Floyd is the best right now, but as long as there are people clamoring for him to face these top ranked guys there's no reason not to. I mean, are there any reasons why he shouldn't face Mosley and Cotto? Even if you think that PBF will beat both of them easily, they are the top ranked guys in the division and thus deserving to fight Floyd. Plain and simple. Of course, if Pac beats Cotto, he'd become a top guy to face too.
I applaud you for being level headed enough, despite being a Floyd fan, to acknowledge that Floyd in the later part of his career has chosen to chase only the money, even though he hasn't directly disclosed it., and that's where the problem lies. At this time, I think Floyd will hold the advantage against anyone at 147lbs, but that doesn't guarantee a win and it doesn't mean I don't want to see him fight the best welterweights. Any fan of the sport, at least I speak for myself, likes to see competitive fights; for example, I'll prefer two medium skilled guys, equally matched on Showtime (which they are usually good at putting up these type of match-ups) as opposed to a highly skilled boxer featured on HBO against an over matched opponent, even if the guy is so skilled that he will over match everyone in the division. I'd rather watch a highly skilled fighter vs another equally matched skilled fighter, period, who doesn't? As the other poster mentioned, Floyd has created this criticism upon himself, because he is calling himself the best and all time greatest. When you hold yourself to such a high regard, so will the fans who are listening and watching -- they will simply expect the best, no less. So when these types of match-ups are made, like in his last 5 fights, where he is fighting carefully chosen opponents, he will get called out for it, and will continue to do so. I think if Floyd were to fight and beat the top guys at 147lbs, Mosely, Cotto, Margarito, Berto, he would silence his critics, I don't see why he wouldn't.
finally an objective view from someone who dislikes Floyd, I like the fact that you acknowledged his skill even tough you don't care for him much.:good
I honestly believe that the "REAL CRITICS AND GURUS", people that actually get "paid" for their Boxing Knowledge...Have a great deal of respect for the Skill, Technique, Defense and even resume of Floyd Mayweather. The harshest and the most criticism actually comes from the "VASTLY UN-INFORMED" Posters on the myriad of BOXING FORUMS. ESB Included!!!
Look...I agree that Floyd persona, arrogance and even somewhat flashy lifestyle may "turn-off" the CASUAL fan. But I thought that "educated" posters in ESB would at least give the credit where credit is DESERVED!!!!
You just hit the nail on the head with my problem with Floyd. I don't discredit the fights he's taken (until JMM): Zab was arguably the best WW at the time, Baldo was one people were asking for (no matter how easy it turned out - I'm even glad Baldo got his Gatti fight as he deserved the extra payday) and NO boxer would turn down the $$ in the DLH or Hatton fights, period. BUT... WW was strong at the time and he just "retired", let them fight each other, then yaps about "not ducking anyone" and returns to fight a guy he KNOWS he'll beat and still have a shot at 1M ppv's. He turned his career over to pure $$. That's fine, just admit it, cut out the "I fight the best" bull**** and don't expect respect for it. He likely will be the most disrespected member of the HoF, but he has no one to blame but himself. (If he fights 2 of Shane, Pac, Cotto, though, he does gain a significant measure of that back; but if he doesn't take Shane next, again, he's just leaving himself open to "too old" criticisms; if that's something he cares about, then just fight the ****in' guy). And the pool at 140 is NOT "VERY DEEP" (Khan, Urango... are you kidding?). And if you think he's going to 140, you're crazy; he wouldn't meet JMM there, he's not meeting anyone there.
My bad...you were obviously under the impression that I was saying that Floyd could "move down" to fight the "talent pool" at 140lbs. In fact, what I meant was...that it is possible, that for a "BIG MONEY" payday..."they" would make the jump to 147lbs to fight Floyd.
Great....that's all we need. Floyd vs. a JrWW. :roll: So are so much a part of the problem you don't ****in know it...
I agree with what you say that he didn't get the credit he deserves but you make it out like he was the underdog in all those fights. Very few people gave Gatti, Hatton (other than 98% of brits) or Baldomir a chance at winning. But I do agree that after he won a lot of people discredited him when mostly he fought the best the division had to offer.
Joe Calzaghe {a true all time great} will also go into the Boxing Hall of Fame as one of THE MOST DIS-RESPECTED FIGHTERS IN HISTORY!!!!! {mainly due to American racism}
