I even liked SJR, even though it was ridiculous.

True story: I went to a Hank III/Jackass/Damn Band show a dozen or so years ago in a small venue, and was able to meet Williams and shake hands with him afterward. I cheekily asked if SJR was ever going to get together again, but wasn't expecting his response: high as ****, he pulled me in close (still holding my hand) and put his face up to mine so I could smell the hooch and made very uncomfortable and sustained eye contact while saying "I vow to you, brother. SJR will rise again, we should probably have a new album out within 2 years, or you can have my guitar."

Delivered on his promise about eight years too late. He owes me a rig. Word is bond.

Phil's also a boxing aficionado and has much larger passion for black and death metal than his other peers in Pantera did so he gets points for that as well.

 

My esteem for Conquest has risen, but consequently I have to say I'm reevaluating how good a prospect Turchi is.

Exactly, and there was nobody around yet with their "groove metal" sound, that only a few years later would become ubiquitous with so many dime-a-dozen impostors (of whom the least annoying were probably Machine Head). They literally invented a sub-genre, mostly spun out from thrash but really a confluence of all four members' tastes giving them a very distinctive feel, that none of the cheap imitators could ever quite nail down.

 

I've hated Pantera for a long time and have been in countless arguments about it over the years. Nothing you say or do will change my mind about it
