I ****ing hate Robb Flynn and Machine Head with a passion, finally something @UnleashtheFURY can see eye to eye on.

 

As a guitar player with a slew of friends that were aspiring metal guys in training, I must admit, I grew very weary of hearing the non stop ball licking, fawning adoration and elevation to a near Christ like figure of Dimebag both before and after he died, in terms of his actual guitar playing. It bothered me almost as much as the fawning over Jam Master Jay. I always valued those those far more, hence why Down succeeded and Damgeplan failed. Kind of like how anything Slash does is a failure without Axl.

 

I can't stand intramural fights over music, especially within the metal community, that being said, I used to be literally exactly like you, and know entirely where you're coming from. Let's see, I used to be far Left, and be a grating extremist of what is and isn't real metal, or horror or whatever exploitation genre fare I was talking about at the time. But, have gotten over all of it, calmed down, and don't take any of it all that seriously anymore. Sometimes stuff still gets on my nerves, here and there, but what are you going to do? You can't force people to think the way you think, no matter what. Even for someone like me, who's fairly good at twisting people to think the way I want them to.

One of the main reasons I've adjusted my thinking on metal a little is because, I hate seeing the baby thrown out with the bathwater, I try to always place blame on the people imitating, as opposed to the originators, no matter how shitty their hellspawn may be. Same goes for political trends etc. even though its not always the easiest road to travel, putting everything into into the correct historical context, and into the proper perspective is best. I don't care about the long term ramifications, I refuse to hold it against them if their initial intentions or movements were pure.

 

Part of the reason why I have mellowed out is because I'm faaaaaaaaar more cynical than I used to be. Your passion comes from a sense of idealism, of what should or shouldn't be the way to do things, when you stop caring is when the cynicism takes over.
