WBC International Silver cruiserweight title at stake, Turchi's second defense. Card airs live on Sky from 3pm EST on Friday. Turchi, a brick-house southpaw, looked very impressive making his first defense with a blitz of Argentine glass cannon Darío Germán Balmaceda in February. He passes the eye test so far, but is yet to face a real top 40 cruiser. Tony Conquest might have a better-looking record numerically than any of Turchi's opposition to date, but I'm not sure he does in fact constitute a step up. Balmaceda might, along with fellow Argentine journeyman and Turchi victim César David Crenz, be more dangerous h2h than Conquest, a former Commonwealth titlist who just returned 11 months ago from a two-year layoff and has really fought nobody of consequence in his 5-0 (1) march since he was dethroned via KO5 by Ovill "The Upsetter" McKenzie in April of 2014. We could be in for, if not a competitive match-up, at least a highlight reel worthy KTFO moment, and perhaps a late entry for top honors this year.
In chief support is a clash for the vacant EBU light welterweight strap, and more of interest to me, yet another Italian vs. British match-up, for another WBC International silver title, at super featherweight - this one between Devis "Boom-Boom" Boschiero and Martin Joseph "Wardy" Ward. This one is pretty compelling (despite both men probably hitting their ceiling in this sort of match at this stage of their careers), almost certain to go twelve and I imagine could easily have a controversial outcome. @UnleashtheFURY - think I remember you being a fellow Boschiero supporter?
Orlando Fiordigiglio also on the undercard. Pretty crazy, a few years ago he was a pretty big draw on the domestic scene, was national and European Union champ for a time...but now relegated to 6-rounders against negative-record types buried deep on a card.
@HamburgBuam @Drew101 @Nonito Smoak - fellow Boschiero appreciators, IIRC. Card is worth tuning in for, if only for the pair of Italy vs. UK intercontinental silvery-green title matches.
I'm looking forward to seeing Turchi fight. I have read good things about him. I'm surprised Fragomeni isn't on the card somewhere. I think he he is still fighting and is a good friend of Turchi's.
Friend of the family you mean, surely? They're plural generations apart. Perhaps a school chum of Turchi's nonno?
Yes. I read that Fragomeni is good friends with Turchi's father. Fragomeni is pushing 50 but is still very popular in Italy.
If you mean the vacant EBU light welterweight title contest, look again; I did mention it, just obliquely as the others interest me personally far more.
Which is a real pity, since he doesn't deserve it, he's still a solid contender IMO. Clearly Vitu is the second best French LMW behind Soro, so to lose to him is no big deal, and as far as the Attou match goes, it was a blatant robbery, the one judge that had it 117-111 for Orlando was the only one that had it almost right, it should have been 117-110. Orlando stay far far away from France.
I wasn't aware of that even having been in play. I'm not sure you can really classify a green cruiser hesitating to make that large a leap up in class versus a touted unbeaten heavyweight a "duck", though. edit: oh you did mean cruiser. I didn't realize Tervel was campaigning there. Still...
Yeah, based on this demotion foisted upon him you would think he disgraced himself with consecutive brutal KTFO losses or something, or else wise had a drastic precipitous decline in form...which, to my eyes at least, he never did.
I know Tony, I have done since he was boxing at Dagenham ABC. He is a top man, one of the nicest people I've met in boxing, I can't speak highly enough of him as a person. So I am really hoping he gets the win, it's a big ask, I understand that but I know he is in great shape and has worked very hard for this one. He is an underdog but I honestly believe he is a very live underdog.
